I had sown some tomato seeds a couple of weeks ago, and put them in the heated propagater because it was so cold at night.

Yesterday was baking hot but I forgot my poor little seedlings which were only hanging on by a thread, and when I checked this morning all that was left were a few crispy wispy little stems. 😰. So I’ve replanted, plus courgettes and melon seeds, so fingers crossed I don’t murder these as well! 😨

I planted some cosmos, they have shriveled too. Not going to bother now.

Oh dear what a shame ladies you will have to get out and replant,we planted some seeds for the bottom of the garden to fill up some gap's and the birds pecked them all up again we must have put them in too near the top of the soil,we will have to have a rethink.

Cosmos grow easily when the seeds are scattered outside . I have some in my plastic greenhouse , but they are a bit straggly , I do some there and some scattered , they all grow

Never tried the scattering, I am surprised they have enough time to grow into flowing plants. I will give it a go Aggie. Lovely to hear from you.

Daisy, somewhere I read if you slice a tomato and ‘plant’ a slice in compost the seeds will germinate. It may even have been on here! I have sown seeds this weekend so no seedlings yet, but keeping an eye on the compost. They should be up by the time I go on hols. Great timing eh? 🙄

Grauntie I grew some tomatoes like you described last year. They do grow ok but they didn’t develop any flower until about the third truss up and the skin was rather tough. But when I used them for cooking/ grilling they were fine.
Hopefully you will have more luck than I did.
This year I have grown some tomatoes from seed I brought from Wilko and so far they look ok

Or you can just stick a whole tomato in some compost rather than slicing it up!

Oh dear Daisy you’re not having a lot of luck with your seedlings.My plants grown from tomato slices are doing well (sorry to rub it in).
I’ve also got some leggy cosmos but also have some saved seed from last year which I’ll scatter.

Clover - I think it was you who suggested the tomato slices propagation, so I'm pleased yours are doing their thing. I have a mental picture of all us grannies planting tomato slices in their gardens, and imagining what our neighbours must be saying to each other!! I used to have no trouble growing from seed, but this last few years I seem to have lost the touch.

Nanto - thank you for the warning about it going cold again. I haven't put this batch of seeds in the heated propagator, but I'm keeping the greenhouse at about 10C overnight, so hopefully they'll be ok. But they haven't come up yet! I shall go and give them a good talking to.
