Sunshine Bungalows as Qwerty said are hard to come by now so your very lucky 😊 Wonder why they don't build more there is a need for them after all isn't there .

Daisy our old house had the same kind of Banister ,the Horizontal planks , we once tried taking them off to put spindles in they wouldn't budge so we gave up trying .

Couldn't you talk OH & his woodworking buddies to make new 'turned' spindles Daisy? A light hallway appeals to me too.

We were lucky when it came to decorating our hall, stairs and landing as BI , and nephew are painter and decorator's by trade so all we had to do was supply the materials and they did the rest , they even boxed in under the stairs so we had extra cupboard space.
How we are in the flat its easy, no stairs , its great .

Qwerty - I'd happily move to a bungalow, but OH is adamant he's never moving.

But - celebrations!! The decorator is coming on 11 December. Even better, we asked for suggestions without telling him what our thoughts were, and he said he'd keep the bannisters waxed and he'd even out the colour (it's a bit patchy) and suggested if we want to have a feature wall to choose a fairly lightish colour and do that same colour at 50% on the other walls. He suggested satin woodwork, but OH really wants gloss, so gloss is what we're having.

And I think (hope) I've persuaded OH that we do need new stair and landing carpet.

It's always a compromise when we are doing anything with the house - our tastes are very different, so it's a matter of delicate negotiation to arrive at something we're both happy with.

That’s good news Daisy , I wondered If the the decorator would come up with some ideas to help you as they do have more experience, I like the sound of what he said but like you I would have gone with wood rather than gloss paint but like you say treading lightly is the key, as if you want a new carpet as well we women know we don’t push our luck, my Dd always sets the seed with her OH and just makes the odd remark which is usually met with definitely not for instance a new kitchen, but by the time she’s finished it’s all his idea 💡.
It will be done for that special holiday that’s coming up too ! We should have a before and after pics really Daisy 😬

Qwerty - I was counting on the decorator having some ideas! Yes, treading lightly is essential, and deciding what you are happy to compromise on and what you are not!

I'll take some 'before' pics for you.

Qwerty I do the same as your DD I plant the seed and watch it grow into his idea 😊
Always get a grumble at first but then I leave it and a few weeks later I get the idea back to me as his thoughts 😊 Deviousness at its finest 😂

Oma - not deviousness at all - it's diplomacy!!

Update - work is in progress, and we're both pleased with it.

We ended up with two shades of grey and are keeping the bannisters natural wood. Hopefully it will be finished tomorrow.

Gem - great minds! There are so many shades of grey it's bewildering - everything from pinky-grey to bluey-grey to yellowy-grey and greeny-grey. OH's colour vision isn't wonderful, so we've had some interesting discussions about compatible shades. In the end we chose the shade for the darker wall and then had 50% lighter for the other. But when the painter came to put it on the walls this morning there was very little difference between the two, so he went off and got a lighter version. They were the paints that you can get mixed to order.

In artificial light it looks a little bit darker than I had in mind, but I think it will look really nice when it's finished.

There is a dado rail along the stairs and landing walls. At present it is 2 shades of cream/beige type colours, one above one below the rail. I would be happy to repaint in the same colours but OH wanted a change. But we could never decide on a colour scheme until we finally we decided on greys. There are so many shades, as you say Daisy!

I'm sure yours will look lovely
