Decorating the Hall

    Decorating the Hall

We've been talking about this for several years. Every January I start it off with "we really need to do the hall, stairs and landing - they're a mess". OH makes his contribution to the conversation: "Hummmph". Me: "shall we try and get it done before Easter?" "Hummmmph".

    Easter comes, Easter goes.

So does the rest of spring, all of summer and into the autumn.

I try again! "We really need to do the hall, stairs and landing before <that word which must not be mentioned in October!> OH: Hummmmph"

After 5 years of this, guess what! Someone is coming to give us a quote on Friday morning. I'm so excited it's sad!!!

        Ooooo exciting 😊
I do all our Decorating so I make the decision when it gets done but after my little fall a few weeks ago off the ladders I'm not going to attempt the high part of the stairs again , I usually climb to the top of the ladders and use a roller on a pole but think that's not wise now , luckily our friends partner is a decorator and will do it at mates rates when I need it done again ,
I love decorating so apart from that and ceilings I will still do all the rest myself 😊
Im not fat just 6ft too small

Well done you little spring chicken you.😉😂 In my day I was known to stay up all through the night finishing wallpapering a room I'd started that day. Like you Oma I performed some very acrobatic moves.

I am hoping to persuade OH to get someone in to do ours. We do our own decorating usually, but I would really prefer someone else to do the stairs etc.

Oohh I’m excited for you Daisy , we had ours done professionally last year it’s just too much for us to do it ourselves we’ve gone from emulsion to wallpaper good luck with the estimate hope you are sat down at the time😬

We've always done our own decorating and usually I do the gloss and OH the emulsion, but like Gem, I don't want OH doing the stairs.

We had a chat about colours last night. OH wants to make the stairs wall a 'feature wall' in a darker or brighter colour. I'm not so keen as there's not a lot of natural light in the hall anyway and I want to keep it simple and brighten it up with accessories. I also want to change the stair and landing carpet. It's about 10 years old and is looking a bit tired. I'd like something lighter (it's a sort of cinnamon colour) but with the dog (and often dogs) it needs to be serviceable too.

The bannisters are currently natural wood and OH wants to paint them white, and again I'm not keen. We spent hours some years ago taking the white paint off them and putting it back seems silly.

There will be some interesting times ahead in the Daisy household.

Daisy I do love natural wood on bannisters in our old family house the bannisters had been blocked in by previous owner and when we uncovered them they had the most amazing spindals,it took me months to slowly remove the layers of old paint but they looked fabulous when finished the hallway always drew compliments when someone new visited.
Here in the bungalow we obviously have no problem but we are now looking to redecorate our bedroom, its been 2 yrs since we moved in and only did it with a lick and a promise when we first moved,I will have it done before that certain day in December but really need to get looking at paper in the next couple of weeks. My John will do it himself as the ceiling are not too high I'm not sure if I want just one wall behind my bed patterned and the other 3 plain colour or patterned all over,I think with the room not being massive I will go for just one wall patterned it will make it look bigger on the eye.
                    Keep Calm,You're Fabulous

Good for you. Fingers crossed that the quote is reasonable. Hall stairs and landing are the worst bit of decorating. It affects every room in the house. I am feeling quite smug now because I live in a bungalow. Ha ha! Good luck.

I think I want a sort of Scandi look, but OH is really keen to have white bannisters! Glamm, unfortunately, they're not beautiful wooden spindles - they're lightish/oak coloured planks of wood, fixed horizontally. Our house was built in the late 60s, an era of chuck-'em-up-cheap building! There's nothing attractive in the design or materials - just bog standard everything, and we've still got Artex ceiling in most rooms! Having said that, I do like the house, and it's fairly easy to clean and maintain.
