Cosmos

Has anyone any idea why some of my Cosmos grown from fresh seed have reached about 5 foot tall but have no sign of flowers..Only about half of them have flowers. I kept them watered and as I said it’s only some of them. I shall have to “Google “ it when I get a minute if no-one has any bright ideas.

Clover - I don't know! Were they all the same variety/colour? Some varieties grow taller than others, but generally if you get loads of good healthy leaves on a plant, but no flowers, the soil has been too rich - too much nitrogen which encourages leafy growth.

OH grows sweetpeas every year, a lot of them, in 3 or 4 tubs. This year only one of the tubs gave flowers, and then not in huge quantities. Last year was a similar story. I suspect planting them in the ground instead of tubs may help in this case. She starts them in the greenhouse, they grow tall but few if any flowers.

My Cosmos are very tall this year, they have only just started to flower.

Funny enough my mini pinks went very tall and straggly this year , no idea why and they have gone over very quick ,
Must have been this strange orange thing we have been getting lots of heat from they not used to it

Daisy they were all from the same packet of seeds and planted in the garden amongst the ones that have flowered.

Gem my sweet peas weren’t up to scratch this year either.

My sweet peas have been really good this year and so has my neighbour’s , they are tumbling over our fence mixing in with ours . It looks really nice.
My dwarft sunflowers which were supposed to grow to about 12 inches high grew to almost 3ft but they did flower unlike Clovers plants

Hubby planted some cosmos for the first time this year.
A pal gave him them when they were about 6 inches tall.
They have all flowered,but some are short,some are tall.

I grew cosmos from seed for the first time ever , they are growing like tryffids , as tall as myself and bushy , they are really only coming into flower now , it is a new garden , raised beds so maybe decent topsoil from our builder . They were "free"seeds with a gardening mag . I grew Cleome from the same mag and they are enormous too

That's my theory shot to bits, Clover!!!

I usually grow them from seed - they're one of my favourites) but I bought plants this year and they took a little while to get flowering, in a pot, but they have been covered flowers ever since!

Aggie - perhaps that's the secret - good soil. Clover's might have varied from one part of the garden to the other, or have more sun in some parts.

I think it might be because they are in the border I kept watered in the dry weather, they are the tall variety, I love them.

I was half listening to Gardeners’ Question Time on the radio this afternoon and I think they were talking about Cosmos not flowering. By the time I started to listen properly they’d moved on to another topic. Did anyone else hear it?

I shall be interested to see if my cosmos will be flowering when I get back, they did have some buds on before I came away

Lots of people's Cosmos seem late to start flowering this year. I'd have thought with the warm weather they'd be early?????
