Yesterday was a '3 tea day'.
GD was being collected early by SIL to go to karate, as Wednesday is karate day. Not enough time between GD and I getting in and SIL coming, so I planned a sandwich tea for her. She has a cooked school meal every day anyway. On the journey home she told me that it was the school teddy bear's picnic that day, and they had sandwiches! Slight change of menu and she agreed to beans on toast. I had planned to cook pasta for them both until I realised how early GD was being picked up, but just did GS a quick tea of fish fingers, smiley faces, peas and sweetcorn (the child will now eat veg, in small portions!!)
GD and SIL left, DD arrived later we all had a good chat and eventually she and GS left.
We normally have something fairly easy on GC days. We decided on chicken pie, from the freezer, new potatoes and veg. Mum phones with her shopping list on Wednesday nights, then I add it to the Tesco order. I dealt with that (it takes at least 20 minutes!) and OH started tea. Veg all prepared oven had been on ages, and not hot enough to cook the pie. We eventually realised that the warmth in the oven was only warm with the residual warmth of cooking GS's tea earlier. We also remembered the power cut when I was on the phone to my mum! That must have been caused by something going wrong with the cooker.
We now had a thawed pie and no way of cooking it. One of our best friends lives in our village. In fact we had invited her round last night but she was going out straight from work so we knew she wouldn't be in. We phoned her, no reply. We have key and OH and her have been friends for ever, so we knew it would be OK to go anyway. OH took the pie round. She left her phone at home, and the friend rang back and I answered. She was of course fine about us using the cooker, but told me the isolater switch was off and was in a cupboard! Then OH phoned. She hadn't known about this switch (as she left her phone at home ) and had taken the pie round to some other friends (it was about 7.30 by this time) and was waiting there until it cooked. I put the veg on. As I heard the car pull up I went to put the steamer on for the broccoli which we don't cook for long. The metal steamer handles were hot, they must have been near the cooker. I burned my right thumb and index finger, and spent all the rest of the evening with my hand on an ice block.
Not a good end to the day, and now no cooker.
We are trying to contact our local electrician to see if it can be fixed.
