Has anyone done, or considered doing airbnb as an income?

Airbnb seems to be the 'thing' these days. I know people who stayed in airbnbs, from entire villas abroad, to a room in someones house or flat, and in between.
My youngest daughter and partner have used them abroad several times. They said the lady in Rome was lovely, friendly, and really helpful.

They now let out their second bedroom on airbnb. They have a small terraced house with only 1 bathroom. It is within walking distance of town though with a nice walk by the river. They have been doing this for a few months now, and it is proving extremely popular!
When she was here last week she showed me their online reviews. All very good, and complimentary about DD and SIL, and most mentioned in praise of the cat

This got OH thinking we could do this.
I am not in favour. I value my privacy, although we have a downstairs loo, we have only one bathroom. And all that washing of bedding and towels, if they only stay 2 or 3 days!

Wouldn't be for me Gem , maybe if I had a separate bathroom and maybe a second reception room ,
I'm ok with Friends and Family staying but not strangers , although if it was some kind of emergency that would be different ,
I'm like you I like my privacy , I like to put my PJ's on and lounge around after tea ,couldn't do that with strangers in your home could you .

I don't think DD is totally at ease with it Oma, but they are saving for Canada. I doubt they will do it again when they get back.

Gem - our GDs' other grandma does it. She's started two or three years ago when she needed an income. She has a 3-bed modern terrace house, one bathroom and a cloakroom. She lives in a small seaside town, but most of her guests have been there on business, family events and some students. She has had no trouble with anyone at all - apart from one lady who expected her to childmind and help out at batthtime (she didn't oblige!) She has met some really delightful people, and some have been back several times - mainly the business people.


I think she offers breakfast but not dinner, and she sometimes gives people lifts to and from the mainline station which is about 2 miles away. She no longer does one night only, because of the bed changing etc.

For her it's brilliant and she enjoys doing it.

Apart from providing an income, I think the other gran enjoys meeting new people, and as they're only there for usually 2 or 3 nights it's fine - she doesn't feel invaded, more like she's god friends dropping by. She's had no trouble/damage at all and everyone has been very appreciative - apart from the lady who expected childminding as a free extra! When the lady told her to bath the children she said she couldn't as she wasn't CRB checked for that, and her insurance didn't cover it.

My DD too has met only nice people who have taken care of things, Daisy.

The woman who wanted childcare help obviously had a weird idea of what an airbnb host provides!!
