    A surprise pension

Well turning 60 isn't so bad. I had a letter about my Bhs pension soon after my birthday. It's very small as I was only in it for 18 months, but at least it's something in my own right.
Now I've just heard that my first company Ross Foods might have been paying into a pension for me, and they've been trying to contact me. I was there 10 years.
I hope it's good news. I'm not spending it yet, though LOL.

granny jules - that's lovely news. I got a very tiny pension (less than £1 a week) from one place I worked for just 2 years, and when I was 60 they offered me a lump sum which represented a good few years pension, and I accepted. Still it was something I hand't anticipated and very nice to have.

We found a dirty old tin in the garage with pension docs in which I knew we hadn't paid into for over 30 yrs. Husband thought they had been cashed in years ago in times of financial difficulties but when I checked they were still live. Two of them are amazing (taken out in the early days of private pensions) and despite not having been paid into for all these years are going to make an enormous difference to our pension income. The third will give us enough money to buy a small car and have a sum to draw on for emergencies, about £31k. My pension is complete rubbish and having taken advice we are not going to take a new pension for me but save it. If I put £600 a month into a pension now the monthly return on retirement will be very small whereas if we put it into a savings fund we will, on the basis of me living until 86, give us more money to live on than a pension in my name.

it is a minefield and next year the above may have all changed........

Wow Zizi that it lucky for you. I don't think mine will be much, but it will be mine. It'll go into the kitty, but I haven't had any money of my own, to put in there for years. Luckily Hubby doesn't mind me spending his.
                  I'll just feel good.

Zizi - that's great. What a lovely surprise. I think most private work pension schemes try to contact you via your National Insurance number when you are approaching pension age, but it's even better when you find gold in old tins. Enjoy. xx
