    Changes to Online Payments (Visa)

The way online Visa payments work is changing. I think in the UK the new system comes into effect in April (it's September in some countries).

In an effort to reduce fraud and improve security Visa is introducing something called Strong Customer Authentication - SCA, another acronym for us to struggle to remember!

No doubt we will all get used to another layer of security, but here's a little light reading, if you'd like to know more.

Find out how Visa keeps payments secure in accordance with European Commission regulation.

I've noticed I've had to do this a couple of times with my bank Daisy! Got to make sure you've got your mobile handy when they ask for the authentication code! More hassle!

It is more hassle, WeeGranny, but even worse for those who don't have mobiles, or can't get a signal. Also it sounded from what my bank said that some companies may not be up to speed and you could find yourself having to find some other way to pay for your purchase.

It's also a pain when you're making a bank transfer and they ask you to use your card reader! I've always got to go and find it !! And you can bet, when I have got it out in readiness, they don't ask you to use it!

We have a site from the government, tax etc etc works from there, for that we did a DigiD. That is a digital identity, a lot of sites work with that as well, if I can remember I will explain all we have to do to get into the sites!

First we go to the site, click on the DidD, then swap to the mobile as our DigiD is on there, open the app, are we asking to open a site, yes, then we get a 4 number code, we fill that in on the site, click again and on the mobile swipe and we get a QR code, we scan that on the site and if all is well we are allowed in!

This is not handy if you have no idea how to use mobiles etc, but, we have to have it, that is why the centre I do coffee for have the help to go and do it all there.

Visa work with those codes as well, either by mail or message. In fact most of the bank payments we make we use a QR code. I was in a phone place yesterday for a new case, I had just left the pool so I had no cash with me, he showed me a code, I took a photo with my camera and he sent my bank a "tickie" code and I paid it through the bank. I told him we really have to keep up with all this new technology.

WG I bank with Barclay's and always need the card reader for transfers or any online banking. My other account is with the Halifax. With them if paying anyone new I have to retrieve a code from my phone and enter that.

Last week both OH and I in separate shops had to put our pin numbers in rather than Contactless, so this must all be part of this new security.

It's all getting so complicated - they try to tell us is easier (!) and safer. We don't always get a phone signal at home (it's not just our wifi that's in the dark ages!) and I avoid using phone apps as much as possible.
