    Registering a Power of Attorney

Continuing the discussion on this on another section, this is the link to register your POA.
A solicitor can do this for you, but will charge.

If you are able to print out forms and fill them in carefully, check and double check, you can do this yourself!

How to make a lasting power of attorney (LPA): starting an application online, choosing an attorney, certifying a copy, changing an LPA.

I have an appt. With the solicitors who dealt with matters after my OH died. I was told last month when applying to put the POA into action that it had not been certified and it will cost me £500. I wonder if I can get it done cheaper, they hold all the originals plus my will although I do have copies.

I agree with others Gemini, they should be reported, they have left you in a very worrying situation.

Plant - how much of that £500 is solicitor's fees and how much Court fees for registration? The solicitors should have a scale of fees they can show you for various work they do. There's not much you can do about Court costs.

The POA registration was about £80 I think, but this was form to register when the person is losing capacity.

I would look into it Plant. The form you would need to register would be a different one to the one we need, but probably a similar cost. A lot to print off and fill in but saves a lot of money.

When my OH died there was a lot of paperwork to deal with mentally. The Solicitor was the one we used a few years before to make our wills. He suggested he made a POW to be registered when needed. I have two copies of the POW which is lodged with them. The lady I spoke to make an appt. To activate the POW was surprised to see it had never been registered and in that case I would have to see one of their solicitors to get it registered and the fee would be £500, I am seeing him next week. I was awake in the night thinking about this and made a cuppa and fetched the file. Looking back at the correspondence I see that I paid £450 to have the document made up and that covered the registration when needed. I shall be making a phone call today. Thanks for the advice

Mine is already done and signed but needs to be registered for which the solicitors want to charge me 500 pounds. Sil is going to speak to them next week, they are closed until after the New Year

Plant, that’s shocking. They only have to send the paperwork off. As others have said it costs £80, there is even a reduction if your income falls below a certain level.

Plant, the registration should only cost around £80 and a solicitor doesn't need to do it, you or your SIL can Google it and download the forms.

Like you no way would we make a will or POA ourselves, but the official GOV.UK site makes it clear the registration of an existing POA can be done yourself.
In my options most solicitors are nothing short of useless, so I'm sure we can all double check as carefully as they do. Or more carefully in the case of the one handling my mother's house sale

Btw, Enduring and Lasting POAs are slightly different so check which one you have x

** Plant, here is the link. I will also start new thread for this.

Thanks for that Gemini, I have run off a copy and when Sil gets back from their weekend away I will give it to him. He is going to get in touch with the Solicitors next week, they have the document, I only have copies. There are two, one signed by DS and the other by DD. Good idea to start a new thread.

Just an update, I found a letter from 2013 in the file where it mentions a price for setting up POA and registering it was included. I rang the solicitors to say we were going to register it ourselves, Sil had downloaded the necessary forms and I queried the statement in the letter and she checked their ledger and sure enough I had paid for the registration so they are going to set it all up now. I am so pleased I mentioned it as it was so long ago.
