and next it will be May Day!

I can remember when we didn't have May Day bank holiday, we all can.
It is strange time to have added a new one, coming as it does between Easter and the end of May bank holiday.

For our family if has worked out well though. My youngest daughter was born on May 5th, so the bank holiday is always close to her birthday, giving her a long birthday weekend.
This year as she will be 30 her lovely OH is organising several birthday surprises for her over that long weekend. The family meal out, in a private room in a restaurant, is on May Day, May 7th this year.

Gem - I've always thought the May Day bank holiday was odd. If Easter is late (near the end of April) it's all Bank holidays, then nothing until the end of August.

From a teaching point of view, it was a nightmare as we would be doing revision for exams, or completing course work, and if you happened to have a double period with a class on a Monday you lost so much valuable time!

But as you say, there are advantages, especially if you have a birthday around then! I think your DD3 is going to have a lovely time!

I can remember when the Spring Bank holiday wasn't fixed - it was Whitsun, and the date of that was determined by Easter. Now it's the last Monday in May - which is usually handy for my birthday!

The first Monday in May was a holiday in Scotland when the miners held a rally in Edinburgh and possibly other Scottish cities. Miners' May Day and it was something to do with the Labour party.....I think!! It's a looooong time ago!

Wee Granny - I think the May Day bank holiday in England was a political decision - and I think that was something to do with the Labour party as well.

My hubby celebrates his birthday on May2nd and we have since the change in Bank Holidays had a couple of days celebrating, when he was 70 he took us to Majorca for the week with son and his wife on his birthday the news was that Princess Charlotte had been born that day so we where very regal that day as she was named after me
This year we are having a barbecue and inviting the kids and their partners (possibly new babies) as we have now got the garden all poshed up with new garden furniture.

You are right Daisy,i can remember the Labour party introducing May Day.

I also remember when we used to have Whitsuntide, and we always used to have nice weather at Whitsun.
