Clothes shopping in younger age shops

I have been looking for a winter coat online all the coats I like apart M&S are in Dorothy Perkins, Topshop, River Island etc BHS seems a little old fashioned, there are other more expensive shops but I like a bargain. I have been in younger end shops but don't always feel comfortable as I feel they are judging me as mutton dressed as lamb but I like modern clothes don't feel old enough In my head for House of Fraser etc should I be changing my outlook on what I wear ?

Qwerty indeed you should NOT !! I know exactly where you are coming from as I tend to gravitate towards younger styles as in my mind I'm still a youngster (I wish) Have you had a look at Next for any ideas they have some Parka style coats which are very fashionable but not too expensive and they wear well I have used my Next jacket for work all summer and its stayed smart even with all the wear & tear it has had.
When it comes to big winter coats I always go for loose fitting coats not too long as I don't like to be trussed up when driving etc,At present I am wearing a M&S fishtail Parka with a big fur trimmed hood I've had it for 3 yrs now and its never dated.

I tend to buy from Marisota. I have a black quilted jacket, it had a detachable fur collar which I thought looked nice but it actually got annoying so I took it off. I have a beautiful gold Mac which is quite thick and rain proof and I have a roll up shove in the bag rain Mac which is good as it is wind proof so if I am travelling on the tube or train and the weather is not freezing it is adequate. I also have an old Cotten Traders jacket which I keep in the car. That started when I was doing a lot of distance site visits. If you go onto a site wearing posh clothes it doesn't give the right impression so I tend to dress down if we are doing site visits. Also have a gold quilted Tesco anorak wch I keep saying I will get rid of but it is so comfy........

Oh and a couple of other macs which are only for summer.

I really don't like clothes shopping in shops any more, I feel self concious and panicky. With The on line firm I can order more than one size and try them on at own pace and see what husband thinks. Local courier man is good, he knows that if I am not in there is a safe place to put the goods and if I am returning things he knocks on the door and if I don't answer he knows to go to the safe place and they will be there in a black dustbin bag with his name on.

I think you should wear the clothes you feel comfortable in and if the assistants look down their nose at you go elsewhere. When we were in Australia I wanted some face cream that I used then, L'Oreal I think it was. I went into a shop and asked for it and the assistant was very snotty and said loftily "madam we are a high end shop and do not sell supmarket brands here" I said "oh really? Well let me tell you young lady if you had been rather more polite you might have persuaded me to buy something else but as it is I shall go and find a supermarket".

I have sometimes bought from supermarkets for work but usually do not try things on.

Qwerty - you most definitely SHOULD look in the so-called younger shops. There's no age limit!!! I bet most of the girls in these shops are far too busy thinking about their own shopping to worry about us grown-up, bargain-hunting ladies! I love Next and often do well in New Look. You're far too young and up-to-date to be relegated to House of Fraser!

Good hunting for your winter coat.

Qwerty, I have met you lots of times. I always think you look fab. Your style is your own. Miles away from old fashioned and fuddy duddy but not mutton dressed as lamb either.
You do your own thing and shop where the clothes you want are!!

I'm not a follower of fashion either. I know what I like and what suits me. Clothes shopping is my worst nightmare. When we were in Barcelona last week, we saw some lovely shops, and hubby would say go in and have a look round, you might see something you like. I declined every time.
Qwerty, if you want to look in younger end shops, you should, regardless of what anyone thinks.

I love John Lewis clothes too. We also have Debenhams which has super clothes, it's just I hate shopping in high streets. ! I do like to do it online and also use Marisota and Kaleidoscope, and there are others like http://www.artigiano.co.uk/, and http://www.grayandosbourn.co.uk/ for example which are more pricey but have Sales and if you look long and hard you can really get bargains. I still have clothes form them from 15 years back.

There is also http://www.julipa.com/ and I love the coat I got from House of Fraser in the Sale 3 years ago. It is double sided, very smart, £145 new and I picked it up for £55 !!! And a very modern fit I may say.

I think you have to look around if you get the time online and see what is on offer.

I rue the passing of Ann Harvey It was part of Aquasuctum, (spell)? Fabulous clothes, still going strong in my wardrobe and they closed in 2011.

Qwerty if you see a coat you like, in a style, colour and fit that suits your personality and at price that reflects in the quality then disregard what shop it is in. I wouldn't worry about age the shop is targeting at , the company just looks at its profits, not its customers and as for the staff, a sale to them counts towards their end of the month sales figures which they are obliged to reach .
I buy and wear clothes I like from wherever I like, the only thing I bear in mind is the fitting, some shops aimed at 'Younger ' customers can be slightly smaller fitting then shops like M and S .

Oma, I agree, the so called Ann Harvey range at Bon Marche is nothing like the original which is so sad, as I was really excited when they said they were coming back. Turned out to be a cheaper and not very well cut version with not much going for it. I also have 4 jackets (or is that 5)? and 3 coats from them, plus a skirt, 3 pairs trousers, a pair of evening shoes, and so on bought before they closed down. Nothing has come close to replacing it, sadly.

Dorothy Perkins is my favourite shop, always has been, what i have noticed is dresses etc, are now too short, so don't find it as easy finding clothes, but if i like it I would get it, x
