    Letting the grey take over!

I think we have discussed this before, years ago.

I colour my hair, as being dark, grey really shows. I have been happier with my hair dark anyway as that has always been my colour.
I am now toying with not colouring it. I would be perfectly happy for it to be grey now really, but its the streaky dark and grey look I don't relish, plus the growing out of the colour.
I know if I have it cut a bit shorter it will speed up the growing out process a bit.

Blonds are so lucky they, don't have to think about this! OH doesn't colour hers and no one has really noticed the change from blond to grey hair. She occasionally has highlights in but hasn't for a few years now.
I have a box of my usual colour in so will use that next week. Then I don't know whether to then use a slightly lighter shade a couple of times before stopping, so people get used to my hair not being as dark?

    Decisions decisions.

I used to have dark brown hair. When the first grey began to show it was just before DS’s wedding. Both DD and DiL persuaded me to have it coloured. So I did, And it looked better. As I’ve got greyer my hairdresser has subtly changed the colour to a sort of light brown / bolder / grey. I’ve no idea what it would look like if I let it go but suspect I wouldn’t be happy with it as I think it would be a mess. So I just let her decide as she’s a professional and knows what she’s doing.

As I was a red head my hair is now what my mother called pepper and salt. I will not be colouring it.

Plant, like you, I take after my mother for "pepper and salt", I haven't coloured it since using henna in my 40's. My father had a lovely head of white hair, I often wished it was like that, but, as I am told, we have to accept what we get!

Gem, a friend is growing hers out and somehow or other gets a lighter tint each time, I have no idea how that works though.

Letting the hairdresser guide you is good idea Sum1, if you are happy with the results as you are.
I colour my own hair so am on my own as it were!
Plant your hair colour is lovely as it is.
It will be interesting to see how your friend goes on with it Lizzie.

Well I let mine go for ages but it only ever got grey around the edges so I have coloured it again ,
As you know it came out Red and the last one a bit darker ,
Im losing a lot of hair it has gone very thin so I’m only using a wash out dye ,
If it went white I would be happy but it’s a bit wispy washy salt & pepper .
Im not fat just 6ft too small

Lop it off Gem! It’s surprising how quickly it grows. I would love to be salt and pepper, or white like my brothers, but my hair is naturally dark ‘common mouse’ as my mother described it, with a few grey hairs at the temples. I have it highlighted and long for the day, if ever, when it goes white.

My natural colour is/was mousey brown.I used to my hair blonde.
It must be about 15 years since i dyed it. Mine is white now,and i do like it.

. Grauntie I can't bear to have it cut short.
ShortER though will be the way to go I agree.

Gem, I agree with Grauntie about having it cut, but not so short you feel it isn't "you".

Sum - I love the colour of your hair on recent photos on FB - it suits you and looks very natural.

I have been incredibly lucky with my hair colour. My original colour was very dark brown, but grey hairs were showing by the time I was 18 (that's not a typo -18!) It went grey-ish very quickly, and to be honest I hardly noticed. I was in my early 40s when it became more grey than brown, and has been white for a long time. Lots of people used to ask if it was natural though. Successive hairdressers advised against colouring it as white hair is so porous, so it's been its natural colour for many years.

Your hair is lovely Daisy. It is the fear of a 'witchy' look of dark and grey stripes which I fear, as my long hair is going nowhere. I would also have some nice pastel colours sometimes if mine were white

Maybe, taking Grauntie's highlights method, I should speak to our hairdresser about that when she cuts my hair next week.

Gem - it's a good idea to talk to your hairdresser. She may come up with some ideas you haven't thought of.

I was very keen to have some pastel colours not long before Lockdown, and I happen to mention it to OH who was so horrified I abandoned the idea!

I thought it would be fun to have some pastel streaks - if Helen Mirren can go pink all over it can't be bad!

I hope this works, I have been to the hairdressers and it fascinates her how my hair is white at the front and very dark at the back.
