Are socks underwear?

This was a topic of conversation at the Easter Sunday lunch table. Far too complicated to explain how we got there LOL
Anyway, some thought socks were underwear, as they are kept in the underwear drawer. Others said, no, underwear goes under your clothes - bra, vest, pants, but not socks. There was a bit of discussion too about tights, a grey area upon which no one could decide!
I am in the socks are not underwear camp.

Now I would say socks are underwear, never thought about how I get to that conclusion, but knicks, undies, bras, vests and socks are underwear....I was buying the GK's there Easter Clothes from Matalan online, and socks come under the underwear section..... oh yes and I would class tights as underwear too....

I would say they are socks!!! You (well," I" to be precise) say socks AND underwear. If socks were part of underwear then there would be not need to list the separately. But Aggie has a potent argument!

Well I have just asked DD24 and she said underwear, because she puts them in her underwear draw with knicks, etc

I would not class them as underwear (more general wear) and I do have a separate sock & tights drawer,some socks are worn as slippers though ?? and if I wear tights sometimes more of my legs are on show than hidden so they can't be classed as underwear (or can they) ??

I keep my socks in the same drawer as my hankies (tissues bring me out in spots even at my age!), so does that make hankies underwear as well?

I have just had a look at one or two department online shops and they list socks separate from underwear .
I wouldn't class them as underwear, if someone caught a glimpse of your socks when you are out and about it wouldn't worry you but if it were your undies that were on public display it would be a different matter
