    Water Filter Jugs

Has anybody got any experience of using a water filter jugs, please?

Our water often tastes like the local swimming pool and is quite unpleasant. Then you read about all the contaminants in our tap water - everything from limescale to heavy metals and micro particles. Our DS2 has quite a sophisticated water treatment thing. It looks rather like a large tea urn, but you could pour swamp water in the top and have crystal clear drinking water from the tap. I've notice how much nicer tea tastes at their house and the drinking water is lovely. We don't want anything that large but sosmething to improve the quality of our tap water would be good.

We have a Britta kettle in the caravan, but have decided to get some kind of filter jug for kitchen use. We're wondering what kind to get.

We have had a filter jug for years. I dislike the taste of tap water. I used to buy bottled water, but a few years ago decided I was worried about plastics possibly seeping into the water and therefore me. Also the unnecessary use of plastic .

Ours is Aqua Optima brand Daisy.

We have just taken it away with us! I always take when we go self catering in this country.

I’ve also had one for a long time. My current one is a Tesco one and I can buy the Tesco filters with my on - line groceries. I make sure I make a note of when I change the filter as it is easy to forget! The water always tastes fresh and cool which is lovely especially in the Summer.

Gem and Clover, many thanks. It seems that different jugs filter different contaminants. Were you looking for specific features with yours, or just for cleaner fresher tasting water?

We have a Brittas water filter jug,
            Had several over the years,
We live very close to a water filtration plant so our water tastes of chlorine,
Even worse if it's likes of hot tea you can really taste it.

I never fill the kettle from the tap ever.
So a filter jug is a necessity for us.

Strangely enough I'm looking for a new one at the moment,
I was on Amazon last night there are so many , but I seem to always go to the make I know ,

Apart from a few years ago I bought Asda's own make and I must admit it was half the price and a good filter,
So I may look in there again.

Just for fresher cleaner water Daisy. I have been happy with ours and there is always cold fresh water in the fridge.
It does sound as though other models work really well too so you will have plenty of choice

Gem, you're right. There is a lot of choice and my head was reeling last night after reading up on the options.

I decided to order an Aarke Purifier glass filter jug. I had a quick look round at prices, and good old John Lewis came up trumps, and I ordered it. A few minutes after getting an email confirmation of the order I got a second email saying the product was out of stock! If it wasn't in within 28 days they'd automatically cancel the order.

I wasn't amused! So I tried to cancel it, but it seems I had to talk to Customer Service. I rang this morning, and was told I can't cancel it for some obscure reason, which I suspect is to do with their system. But the very charming lady checked and said there are 72 jugs in stock and it will be delivered in the normal 2-5 days time scale. She sent me a £10 e-voucher to say sorry.

The deciding factors for choosing this one were the materials - glass and stainless steel which are dishwasher safe - and the fact that it raises the pH level of the water making it more alkaline which is supposed to be beneficial.

I'll let you know what happens!

How annoying Daisy, That sounds a good product when you get it.

Prompted by this thread I have ordered a new jug arriving today!

I have meant to buy a new one for a while. This is the updated version of the one we have, with a better filling section. It was good price and included 9 filters so had to be done!
The existing one we will keep in the kitchen just for kettle filling, the new one in the fridge door.

Nanto, I don't know that I would have thought about a water filter for the kitchen except for the difference between DS2's filtered water and ours. The water that comes through the caravan pipes tastes awful, so we always use the Britta kettle and top up our water bottles with that.

Gem, that often happens. You have it at the back of your mind that something needs attention or replacing then a random reminder encourages you to do it straight away. I wonder if you'll notice a difference between the two systems. DS2 and DIL use their filtered water for everything like boiling or steaming vegetables, anything they add water to, like making up stock for a casserole. I did point out that they fill the dog's water bowl from the tap, though! I protested on the dog's behalf.

Oma, I hope your new jug is good as well.

Lizzie, I think it's easy to stop using a jug system, just because you have to remember to keep filling it up.

I have always hated the taste of tap water and only drank bottled for several years before the filter jug.
DD3 has a filter attached to their tap, which is a more expensive alternative.

If your water tastes fine, no need to buy anything

I always drink bottled water but I am thinking of putting my old jug in the fridge and stop wasting plastic on the bottles.
