    Remembrance Day Poppies

OH bought our annual poppies in the village a few days ago. There wasn't any choice - they were all the same design and material - so didn't think any more of it until we came to try and wear them.

There was no easy way to fasten them on as far as we could see. Straight pins wouldn't go through them, they just buckled. So we tried safety pins. Again they were really tough and I couldn't pierce them. Eventually we got one half of the stem pierced but pins that were strong enough were too big to pin the stem a second time, so the poor poppy was hanging on more by luck than anything. OH went shopping in the village this morning, came home and changed into work gear to clean the caravan. When he came to change back this evening his poppy had disappeared.

I haven't managed to get my poppy onto any of my clothes, and have even tried to attach it to a handbag, without success.

I'd love to wear my poppy with pride tomorrow. Has anyone else had similar problems?

Daisy, I’ve noticed a lot of people have got their poppy through the tag on zipped jackets. There always used to be like a little branch on the poppy stem to slip over the pin didn’t there?

The one I had last year, little enamel one had the usual metal back fastener. The ones I saw the other day seemed to be the ones you attach to a zip, as WG mentioned. I saw them on the cafe counter at the stadium where but had no cash (as the cafe is cashless) I am there today so will take cash, buy one and hopefully attach it somehow!

When I used to buy the paper ones you attach with a pin I always lost mine and usually had to buy a replacement!

I tried to attach my poppy to a zip on my handbag, but couldn't find a way to make it stay put. It was too stiff to bend, although I admit my hands aren't very strong.

Gem, I'd have preferred a little enamel one, just for ease of fixing, but they didn't have those in the shop.

Oma, the crochet ones sound a lovely idea, especially if (as I hope) they are made by people the British Legion support. Poor B. I hope he is ok, but better not to go out if he's feeling sick.

WeeGranny, the little branch was a really useful way of stopping the poppy falling off, but I expect they are much more expensive to make, and the BL, like all other organisations, are having to calculate costs carefully. Unfortunately the jacket I was wearing on Friday had buttons, but the button holes weren't any help. I wonder how people have fixed them on to zips though, as I gave up on my handbag zip.

I was talking to my DD about this she said she glues a safety pin on the back, and the red poppy and purple poppy on Storms collar she sews a hair bobble on then slides it on his collar, but those are made of felt.
