    Mispronounced words

On a TV quiz this evening pseudonym was one of the answers.

That got me thinking that I have often heard it mispronounced as pseudoname!

Another is tenderhooks instead of tenterhooks. (My OH used to say that until I put her right )

    Also kindergarden instead of kindergarten.

    Any more?

I'm sure there are plenty more. I'll have a think.

I agree, Nanto,. There are lots but I can't think of any at the moment. I'll have to come back to this.

I find the word squirrel hard to pronounce for some reason Oma! I know how it should sound but it doesn't when I say it

Oma, of course Mil is correct as I think it is a German word. (Correct me if I am wrong someone)

Plant, yes, I think kindergarten is a German word as well.

I never thought I had trouble saying the word "cook" except that everyone laughs at my pronunciation. I can't see any other way to pronounce it, unless I make it sound like "cuck", as in "duck".

I used to teach in a school for special needs children and we were able to use the minibus for days out. I was the driver but the indicators, wipers were on the opposite side of the steering wheel to my car. So I frequently hit the wrong switch. One time a little voice came from the back: Is it diccifult Maggie? That’s stuck with me!
Daisy, I also have a problem with‘op’ words. Never knew there were different pronunciations until I started teaching infants in England!
DD used to say she was’fishined’ .

WeeGrany, What a little sweetie, noticing you juggling the switches. He/she sounded very sympathetic.

Teaching throws up some unexpected situations, doesn't it! I taught shorthand for many years, and along with learning the system, students have to learn to listen very accurately. I noticed that southerners (generally) pronounce "our" and "are" the same way. But they are different shapes in shorthand. So I always pointed out that I always said "ower" for "our", and "R" for "are", so once they got used to it, it was very helpful!

I had a lovely Scottish colleague who said that she had to lose her delightful Scottish accent, because English students couldn't understand her.

GS1 until recently thought Strategic was pronounced Strategetic. DD tells me he had corrected several of his friends for 'mispronouncing' it, which he is now embarrassed about

For years I thought facsimile was pronounced fassy mile. Then I heard my husband say it properly!

Our son when he was little, used to describe the dish washer as the ‘Dosh wisher’. It has stuck in the family ever since

Sum1, you've reminded me that I once had a student who was convinced a facsimilie was nothing to do with the machine she called a "fac-smilie".

Not a problem with pronunciation, but finger fumbles on the laptop. I nearly always make errors with congratulations (congratualations), realise (relaise) and delivery (devilery). I'm sure there are others which I can't recall at the moment.
