    Smells

Do you have a good sense of smell?
I know Plant hasn't my DD doesn't have a good sense of smell either.

My lot think I'm weird as I can smell stuff they can't.
I can smell lillie's in a hotel or restaurant or shop before it even see them ,
Different things have odd smells for me,

If I'm ironing for instance polyester when hot smells like plastic carrier bags ,
Cotton smells like cow manure , linen smells of branches.

I'm always sniffing out smells , B will say for goodness sake it smells fine but I have to find the source .
I think that's why I don't like bringing washing in from the line , it stinks of fresh air ,
I know that sounds crazy but I'm ok once it's been in for a while especially if it's been cold and breezy.

My SIL put new carpets and underlay down a few weeks ago,
The smell of the underlay like strong chemicals was awful for a few days , I had the bedroom windows open wide morning and night, no one else noticed it .

There are certain smells I can't cope with , like Lillie's they give me migrain but I also don't like Christmas candles, I love the smell of cinnamon and pine but not heated up,
My DD always has them at Christmas but if she knows im going she won't put them on.
Im not fat just 6ft too small

According to hubby,i wouldn't smell it if the house was burning down.

Sometimes i can smell a candle,or someones perfume.

Hubby's sense of smell is a lot better than mine.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

You are right Oma, I don’t have a sense of smell. Can be very dangerous if something is burning.

I have a very strong sense of smell. It isn't always a good thing!

Oma, I think the sense of smell is really interesting. My very first thought when I've been out and open the front door is "what can I smell?" Today, coming back from the hospital I could still smell the haddock OH cooked two nights ago, despite him putting the extractor fan on, us having windows open all round the house and emptying the rubbish with the empty fish packet that night. One smell that can make me feel quite queasy is bread - both when it's baking and the smell of toast. As for burnt toast - I'd rather go outside in sub-zero temperatures! I agree about washing on the line - sometimes it's just too much! My OH's sense of smell isn't great, and he often goes round the house closing windows I've just opened.

We were talking to DS2 when we picked Eva up today, and his whole family avoid chemicals as much as possible, including using washing liquid with no perfume etc. He says he can smell our washing products on Eva, and I never go to their house wearing anything newly washed.

Plant, I think I've mentioned before that my GD1 has no sense of smell either. But she is very noise sensitive, so much so that when we took her to Cheddar caves she couldn't cope because she could hear everybody's else's hand-held electronic guides and the noise was deafening. She's just done exams at school and has to sit them in a quiet room because the noise of people turning pages, even writing, is so distracting for her. Luckily the school recognises the problem.

Nanto, has your sense of smell changed over the years?

Lizzie, despite the drawbacks, I like being able to smell things!

I’ve never really thought about this before but I think I’m more or less average. There’s nothing apart from obvious pongy things that I dislike.I know I’m lucky to have a good sense of hearing as I sometimes hear things others haven’t noticed!

Your right it can be pain sometimes,

              Daisy
I'm the same with fish or steak , no matter what you do the smell lingers doesn't it,

              Clover
A good sense of hearing is a bonus I think

              Plant
It is a worry in that scenario,
Once Buzz DDs cat was sitting on the table with his tail in the candle flame,
DD didn't smell it, it was SIL who ran down the stairs and put him out,
Unfortunately Buzz has no feeling in his tail so he was quite put out when SIL pinned him down to pat him out 😱

              Nanto

Lizzie, but then there's the advantage of being able to smell wonderful but faint flower scents etc. My OH says I go round the garden like a bloodhound sniffing at everything!

Clover, good hearing as we get older is such a bonus. I'd be lost without my little bionic hearing aids. They are good, but not like natural hearing, and something like a person reading a newspaper near me sounds like gunfire. It isn't always possible to tell what direction a sound is coming from - I've noticed that with emergency vehicles with their sirens going. It's hard to tell which direction until I see their lights, or other vehicles moving over for them.

Oma, Buzz had a lucky escape, but you can understand why he wasn't grateful to your SIL. Another smell I find hard to get rid of is a vegetable stir fry - I don't know why, but it always smells meaty.

Plant, I'm sure you have a very efficient fire/smoke alarm, which I hope will keep you safe. We've got a gas hob and sometimes it's hard to see the flame, and it's easy to forget to turn it off, so I always put the extractor light on when the gas is lit, and check the switches before I turn the light off. I think OH thinks I'm nuts, but when you're busy serving a meal it's easy to forget.

Nanto, that made me smile. I'm sure you'd notice if the house was burning down, but it's interesting you can sometimes smell candles or perfume, but not others. Are there particular fragrances you can smell like floral, or spicy?

Yours sounds like some sort of syndrome Oma!

It must be tricky having no sense of smell Plant.

I think I have a good sense of smell. As Lizzie says it can be a disadvantage!
OH isn't keen on the scented candles I love , and she can't abide the smell when passing a Lush shop. Whereas I have said its the only shop I would want to work in

Oh no lush or the body shop makes me feel ill,
It's so overpowering for me ,

Gem, I've got a small Lush candle - "Orange Blossom" - in our main bathroom, and you can smell it even without it being lit. I like it, but I can imagine some people would find it overpowering.

I remember going round the Body Shop factory when it was relatively new, and it was very interesting, one smell following from another!

I can't even walk through the candle department of Ikea! Makes me ill, my neighbour uses a lot of heavily perfumed wash softener, when she hangs her washing out, I can't sit outdoors.

How does a florist shop affect those of you who are overwhelmed by ( to me) beautiful smells?

My BIL owned one and if we went in I loved all the floral scents in there .

I have a lime and lemon candle I like that and a burner with baby powder smell, it smells like Johnsons baby ,

                              Gem
I can go into a florist and pick out the stinky flowers,
Daffodils stink, I know that sounds strange but if I put Daffs in a room close the door overnight and when I open the door it hits me.
Same with sweet williams , Tizzy used to call them stinky bill's

What I find now my favourite flower Freesia has little or no smell now , I loved the smell of them and sweet peas

I can only wear certain perfumes too, anything with a musk base makes me sick.

The one smell I do love is Febreze the one with the purple flower on the front spring awakening it's called,
I could use that as body spray 😁
