Plant, there is a deposit here on plastic bottles, 2 years ago the deposit came on small bottles and cans, mind you, they still throw them on the ground, quite a few people go round picking them up for the deposit!

Well done, Plant. I've offered people poo bags when it was clear they weren't going to pick up after their dog. The college where I worked had a long drive up to the front of the main building and large lawns either side. Naturally students would sit out there in good weather, but despite being plenty of bins the litter started to become a problem. So staff would go out at lunch time and encourage students to clean up - whether it was their litter or not. Most of them looked a bit embarrassed and helped.

When we lived in The Netherlands, many moons ago, you could take glass bottles back to the supermarket and you were given a money off voucher for your shopping according to how many bottles you brought back.

Last time I was visiting DS he had a black bag full of cans in his kitchen which he was planning to take back to the supermarket to get money back on them. He reckoned it was easier to take a bagful rather than just a few and a bigger refund. Not sure if it's in cash or money off voucher for his shopping.

The refund system does make a lot of sense though, but I remember as a child, even more moons ago, that we got a refund on soft drinks bottles from the shops. So really, it's not a new idea.

WG, when I first lived here, my DH was working away and the milkman came to the door, when it came to Friday (pay day)I had to pay him, I had quite a few bottles from a week or so and he gave me money!!! I couldn't understand it!!

We get a voucher for our cans etc then cash it at the cash desk.

I return empty milk bottles to the milkman, but no money off the bill! I don't mind - it's better that they are recycled by the dairy.
