    A case of mistaken identity!

Tonight I was going to cook chicken in a mushroom sauce. We have some creme fraiche which needs finishing off in the next couple of days.

We got a pack of chicken breasts on the Tesco order on Tuesday. We freeze them singly for future use. OH sorted them out when I was out. I asked her to leave one in the fridge as I intended to use it today.

This evening I went to the fridge to get all the ingredients out.
The little plastic bag I had presumed contained a chicken breast had in fact got 2 crumpets in!!

OH had totally forgotten to leave any chicken out . It was too late to defrost anything, and crumpet in mushroom sauce with rice and green vegetables didn't appeal

I made tortellini for OH, with a slice of garlic bread . She likes that but I'm not keen. I had brie and grapes on toast.

    I will try again tomorrow

Gem, that made me smile! I hope you both enjoyed your unexpected meals.

When we got our first freezer (about 1971!) there was very little frozen food available in the high street, and we went to a wholesalers to stock up. There was a reasonable choice, but no marketing - everything was in plain white cardboard boxes. We chose some apple pies - great for an easy pud with custard or ice cream. However, the first ones we had tasted horrible. I mean really horrible! Gradually we realised as we prodded and sniffed them that they were in fact cheese and onion pies.

I think crumpet in mushroom sauce with rice and green vegetables would be equally unappealing.

Well that would have made a interesting meal 😁
At least you managed to cobble a quick meal together in the end😁

I remember everything was in white boxes , Macro the wholesalers sold everything in them ,
You had to write on the vbox what was inside or like you it was a suprise, a bit like open all hours and him selling tins with no labels 🀣🀣 pot luck of the day.

In the erly 70's we bought our first freezer from a shop called Cordon Bleu.
We stocked up there on frozen food. Everything was in white boxes.
At the time it was the only shop in our town that sold a big variety of frozen food.
Supermarkets sold a very limited amount of frozen food.
I loved that freezer, always kept it stocked up. Thats probably what started my food hoarding problem.

Gem, it would have been a very different meal, crumpets in mushroom sauce.

Gem, good to hear the meal was delicious even if it was a day later than you'd planned.

Nanto, it was so exciting, having a freezer, wasn't it. Our first chest freezer lasted well over 30 years, and now another 20 years on we are only on our second one! The second one is much smaller, because I thought I didn't need an industrial size one, but that was before we had a big dog and keep a month's supply of her food in it. Bad decision, but we're lucky our kitchen is big enough to take an upright fridge and a separate upright freezer.

We don't have large supermarkets really close by so it's convenient to keep a bit of a stock in hand, especially when we have unexpected visitors.

I remember the excitement of our first freezer too!

We used to help an elderly neighbour of ours, taking him Sunday lunch etc, and he let us borrow freezer space. When we got our own I was so excited! We didn't have a car and went with my mum and dad to stock up when they went to the freezer shop.
I had a list with everything we had in there, and updated it as we used foods or bought more.

                  No such organisation these days

I have an upright freezer in the garage and two drawers in my fridge. My first freezer was a quite a large chest freezer we bought second hand from our local newsagent. We grew a lot of fruit and veg then so served its purpose.
