It's fascinating Lizzie. I did know some things - like 2, 8, 9 and 14, and of course the infamous Tulip Mania. But most of them are facts I hadn't heard before. Thank you for such an interesting post.

Those facts made me smile Lizzie! When we lived there, I found my elbows very useful in a queue when everyone was around me was so much taller!
One fact not mentioned though is that Stroopwaffels should be put on top of your cup of coffee to warm them through!!
I read a novel about the tulip warfare, but I can't remember what is was called. Interesting read though!
Oranjeboom ( Orange tree) beer come from the Netherlands.
Cycling was so much easier there with all the dedicated cycle lanes. I wasn't too keen on the backpedal brakes though!

I used to enjoy a rijstaffel, but my children loved a loempia( like a large spring roll) and chips with peanut sauce or frite sauce from the local takeaway. My DB has just come back from Amsterdam and he tells me me he enjoyed them at the Albert Cuyp market!

Oh yes WG, the stroopwafel on the coffee cup!!!!! I don't like the backpedal brakes, you don't see them as often now though, GD2 used to have a bike with them on, when they were in New York, cycling round Central Park they forgot to tell her about the hand brakes, she used the front one and flew over the handel bars!! She did use them safely after that incident.

I love a rijstafel, all Indonesian food is very tasty.

I did know these, but only because I read a book called ‘Why the Dutch are Different’ last year.
What amazed me was the height as the Dutch suffered so greatly in WWII with terrible deprivation. They were then much smaller in height and width.
It must be all that dairy that’s made the difference!
I don’t think I’d manage very well, being very small - perhaps I’d fit in better in Japan!
