We had a conversation about a similar thing at dog training recently. Our lovely trainer's OH had suggested he buy her a kettle for her birthday. They haven't got a kettle, they don't use a kettle, they don't need a kettle, and it's definitely not a birthday present idea unless the birthday person asks for it!

Oma, is that why you've got artificial grass? I can imagine how (un)thrilled you were with the lawnmower. At least you didn't get an outing to the scrap yard for a part for your car. Guess who gave that treat to his OH one year!

On the other hand, about 4 years ago OH asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I asked for a garden tap and a new hosepipe!

Some men may think a woman would love that present!! Misguided ones mind you

I agree with Daisy if you want and request a household item that different.
I asked my DDs for my bread-maker.

My mum was always very vocal about household items definitely not being presents so my dad wouldn't have dared!

A friend relayed the story of a Christmas when her husband and children proudly unveiled a trolley with a tea service on it as her Christmas gift. She was speechless. They thought she was thrilled, She wasn’t, needless to say!

Oh I’ve been taken to the tip for my Birthday outing and I once got a tin of Brasso in a brown paper bag for a Anniversary gift 😱
It was back in the 80s when everyone had Brass ornaments and horse brasses ,
I mentioned I needed a new tin of Brasso ,

A few days later on our Anniversary I was handed this brown bag before he went to work,
I laughed about it thinking I would get my gift when he came home .
            No that was it 😳
when I got upset he was confused as he said I had asked for it , no I said I was running out and would need some but not as a gift .

I must say presents were much better after that fight I can tell you 🤣

I must be honest and say many years ago, 50+ i used to ask for household items for Christmas presents from hubby.
One year he bought me a food mixer on a stand, another year he bought me a food processer. Also had an electric knife.
I still have them and still use them.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

If you ask for them then they are good gifts Nan2

My DDs struggle with presents for my OH. One year DD1 gave her an electric carving knife as it was what she wanted.

Nanto, that's totally different. They were things you really wanted, like my outside tap and hosepipe! Mind you, I asked for a garden pond 18 months ago, and it's still at the planning stage!

My OH was not a present giver, I had pinking shears one year. I don’t think he ever bought me flowers, he said you buy them and I will pay for them.
