    New Library at last

Our village library closed 6 years ago.
The 1960's building became unsafe so they had to relocate.

Over the past 6 years the library has continued to operate from various temporary locations. including for over 2 years a bus.
Two locations for the new library were found and both fell through after about a year into the planning each time. Pandemic closures and then restrictions have of course also plagued the library.
A new Friends group was formed when the old library closed. I was very concerned that we wouldn't actually get a new permanent library so wanted to join the Friends. A few months down the line I somehow became secretary! Little did I know I would still have that role after all these years.

The library greatly appreciates our group's support and help over all these years.
During the first Lockdown I started to volunteer in the library. I had always said I wanted to once I had the time. My mum having gone to a care home gave me that time. My role was to be there mainly for Track and Trace (remember that?!) I had to make sure users either checked in with the QR code or gave me their name and address, I also did some shelf stocking and answering questions but my main role was to be there for T&T. I read a lot of books over those months!
Once T&T was a thing of the past I stayed on as regular volunteer. I only do one regular half day a week but enjoy it. I am often asked to help with children's craft events and the Reading Challenge during school holiday which I enjoy doing.

Finally the library had a new permanent home. In the community centre which has housed it for the last couple of years. They benefit too from a lovely revamped and extended building. Both the library and community centre benefit from each other's presence. The relationship between community centre and library staff is excellent. It feels the perfect home.

The library closed in May 2022 for the building work to take place. As a member of the Friends and as a v0lunteer I was invited to the pre opening day in December.
The opening date was January 3rd 2023. The library is a lot bigger and is now open 6 days a week, as opposed to 4 and half in the past.

The library has the whole of the front of the building the community centre the rear. There is a large shared office.
There is an adult library and children's library with a reading cafe in the middle. Wi fi and 4 computers. It is lovely place to be, and worth the wait.'

Gem, it's take a long time and a lot of work and perseverance from a lot of people, but my goodness, it looks great - very inviting and friendly. Well done for all you've done over the years. You must be very pleased with the new facilities.

That looks very nice Gem, our library it part of a community centre, there are plans for a new one, but, as a school is using the old building , that needs to be demolished, it could take a few years.

Gemini, what a lovely environment for all age groups, worth waiting for. Well done to all those who pushed to keep a library and help to run it now.
