Gammon and egg, pineapple, or both?

Now you know I like to do a poll on the pressing issues of the day from time to time.
The subject for your consideration today is - gammon steaks!

I have noticed that many pubs and restaurants which serve gammon offer you a choice of fried egg or pineapple with your gammon. Why?? I have never heard of people being asked to chose between a tomato or mushroom with their steak!
No eating beef or spices, gammon is often a safe option for me available on most menus. I do like it from time to time, but I like an egg and pineapple ring. Either missing spoils it for me. I feel it's the sign of a good menu when both are offered. I had occasionally asked for both when only one is offered, but you do feel a nuisance!

So, if you eat gammon, do you like both, or just one or the other or neither?

Gem - I remember a hotel owner friend of ours discussing the new season's menu with her chef. She was trying to catch new trends in popular dishes and asked why on earth did they still have gammon and egg/pineapple on the menu. His answer was "because so many people order it"! It's a good, failsafe choice for a lot of people. For my friend who's allergic to garlic it's often the only choice that's garlic-free.

It's my OH's favourite when we're out - ham, egg and chips with pineapple!

OH regales the story of someone he knew who said on being offered gammon and pineapple “ “I’ll have me gammon on one plate and me pineapple on another with custard, thank you”

Grauntie that would be my OH's viewpoint! She doesn't even like apple sauce with pork, or cranberry sauce with chicken and turkey. I think meat and fruit go well together

          Grauntie - I love that!!

Years ago OH had started a new job and was staying in a hotel during the week while we were house hunting. One night at dinner there was fresh pineapple on the menu, and OH loves it. So the waiter said how many slices would Sir like (it was a posh hotel!). In a moment of devilment he said I'll have all of it! The waiter retreated to the kitchen, clearly uncertain what to do. Nobody had asked for the whole pineapple before!

Then the manager came out and checked , and OH repeated that he'd love the whole fruit. The manager clearly thought he was bonkers, but asked if he could sit down and share it with him! The two of them finished the pineapple and became good friends.

I agree with you, Gem, but who can resist custard!

I love Gammon and if there is only a choice of Steaks etc its a fail safe for me , but i hate egg and Pineapple with it ,
I very rarely eat eggs when out for a meal and i do like Pineapple but not on Gammon , although i love fruit with meat just not that

Im a bit strange with certain things and even after all these years B still cant get his head around that if we are having pork chops i just want that on a plate nothing else with it ,
Same with Gammon im happy just to have that on its own too , I love mushrooms but they have to be in a bowl on their own not on the plate with other food .

I will have chips with these things when out but at home i like them on their own
Im not fat just 6ft too small

I don't like gammon steaks but will have a slice or two off a gammon joint! I don't have egg or pineapple with it, but I do like chips!

Gammon and parsley sauce, mash and peas or green beans. Our idea of heaven!
OH’s family introduced my family to apple sauce with chicken. Not sure if it’s a northen thing but now it’s definitely a southern thing.
Also, cheese with fruit cake. I wouldn’t serve it without now although it seemed odd originally.

I like both with my gammon. A pub about 10 minutes away, have gammon on the menu, and you get both pineapple and egg.
I f i do gammon at home and serve it with mas and veg,i like parsley sauce with it.
Grauntie,we always have cheese with fruit cake.
I've never had apple sauce with chicken, but we have it with pork.
As for cranberry sauce,i don't like it.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Nanto - I like parsley sauce with gammon as well, especially with mash instead of chips.

I've never had apple sauce with chicken, but I thought it was compulsory with pork!!!

                            Love cheese with fruit cake.

I like gammon steak with egg and mushrooms, no pineapple. If I am having roast gammon, there must be parsley sauce.
