She knew it was Wednesday because Patrick had his Blue jumper on ,
Each day had its own colour for Patrick , Monday Green, Tuesday Red, Wednesday Blue , Thursday Brown , Friday Grey, Weekends unless it was cold he didn't wear a Jumper he wore his tatted gardening coat , How she longed just for once that he would change his routine , That she knew was never going to happen . You see this was his way of living a orderly life since her passing ,to change his ways would send him into a spiral of grief she knew he wouldn't get over, and for the sake of their children he had to keep going , So Sarah walked unseen by his side counting the days by colour till colour no longer mattered and he would walk with her forever .
She knew it was Wednesday because it said so on the thing on the wall that she ticked off every day , Maybe she should see the Dr about her memory loss like Doug kept asking her to do , Everyday she forgot the names of things , people she had known all her life were becoming strangers to her , She only knew they were old friends because Doug told her , Funny she could remember everything from her childhood and her life with her very patient husband but could not remember what happened yesterday or if she had had breakfast that morning . The doorbell rang and she went to open the door , a very tall hansom young man stood there with a big grin on his face , Yes can i help you Charlotte asked , then to her great alarm he swung her off her feet laughing , Hello Gran he said your so funny , wheres Grandpa ? Putting her down with a big kiss he strode past her into the kitchen, Charlotte stood there feeling very scared and confused , he called me Gran but i don,t know him . Eyes wide she followed him into the kitchen calling out Doug,s name in desperation . They both turned towards her and she could see the distress in Doug,s eyes and the shock in the young mans eyes , A moment of clarity made her sit down and start to cry , Charlotte knew what was happening to her , Charlotte,s mother had been the same it was called Dementia in her day . She turned to her Grandson Luke knowing in that moment who he was then to her Husband and whispered help me , In a instant they were both by her side Doug wrapping his arms around her shoulder and Luke kneeling on the floor in front off her both men had tears streaming down their cheeks . Dont worry my love said Doug you will be ok , come along Gran said Luke lets pop down and have a chat with Doctor Robinson we will get this sorted , But Charlotte knew it would not get sorted she would only get worse and a great fear gripped her heart. Later sitting in the Dr,s office Charlotte listened while everyone talked around her , The Dr was telling them that it would get to a point she would not know them or what was happening to her , Who was this poor woman they were talking about and why was Doug crying ? Then she drifted off into her own world a happy place where she didnt have to think and all worry was taken away . Doug led her out pleased in a way she was no longer afraid he could not bear the thought of her being scared , Don,t worry Grandpa said Luke we are all hear to help i will ring Mum & Dad lets get you home . Dr Robinson watched them go he had been their GP for 40 years he knew with the help of his family Doug would cope but it was a sad day indeed , Charlotte in her prime had been a very intelligent woman , Head teacher , member of the debating society , and a board member of several charity,s , life can be unfair he thought as he watched the car pull off his drive heading for the unknown but soon to find out
She knew it was Wednesday because she woke up feeling happy. She had that happy all over feeing which made her want to smile.
Megan had never had a favourite day of the week. A day was a day, some good some not so good.
Ever since Gemma arrived in her life however, everything changed. Throughout the week she looked forward to Wednesday. Since her husband passed away, and her daughters were so busy with their lives, life didn't hold much sparkle for Megan. She had good friends, but there was something missing. She dearly hoped for a grandchild one day. Her friends who already were Grandmas told her how wonderful it was, and showed her the photos to prove it. She was happy for them, but this all seemed a long way off for her. Both daughters were very career orientated. Not much chance of the patter of tiny feet any time soon, as far as Megan could predict.
She had met Gemma by chance when out walking, in an attempt to shift some of the pounds she had gained on holiday with her best friend. Cocktails at night, cream teas in the afternoon, and chips too many nights had taken their toll! Gemma took to Megan straight away, and didn't attempt to hide it. Megan found Gemma very endearing, and she was certainly beautiful. Megan was soon totally under her spell.
Before long, a regular arrangement was made. Megan didn't know how long this would last, but for now she was happy. Gemma had put a new spring in her step, and given her a reason to get out and about.
As she washed up her breakfast dishes, there was a knock on the door. Smiling Megan picked up her jacket and bag, and opened the door. 'Hi Meg', said Mrs Harrison, 'here she is. raring to go'. Megan took Gemma's lead, and dropped her knees to pet her, whilst waving Mrs Harrison goodbye as she drove off to work.
'Come on girl' she said to the red setter, 'which way shall we go today?'
