Becoming a Beaver

My granddaughter joined the Beavers. I was surprised it wasn't Rainbows, but apparently lots of girls go to Beavers these days.
She has been going for about 3 or 4 weeks and was enrolled this week. She seems very taken with it so far!

G'S 2 is in cubs and loves it only thing he's settled too, I'm sure she will love it , she looks very proud 😊

I was a beaver scout leader for about five years, it was lovely but unfortunately I had two businesses and was running the carnival which was the biggest community event in the borough and something had to give. So Fter four years I resigned. The kids were mostly lovely but sometimes I wondered if the parents didn't use it as a baby sitting service as I would often turn up half an hour before to find kiddies waiting on the steps and they were always the ones who were late being picked up. All of this in an exceptionally posh area ladies which goes to prove that having money doesn't mean a thing!

This was in the days when girls were not allowed or at least was only being discussed but my group was very anti allowing girls in, they were all die hard scouts who lived their whole lives for scouting which is good but there has to be some progression. I ofnte thought that they didn't even like having Beavers as we were always at the end of the list and even when I asked for some money to buy a flag for a parade that was specifically for Beavers they refused so I bought it myself!

There are always some people who hate any kind of change. Life continually evolves and moves on regardless.

Awww - she looks as though she's really enjoying it. My GD1 is in Rainbows, but i think they move up to Brownies at 7, but they move from Beavers to Cubs is 8. Both our GSs enjoyed Beavers and Cubs and GS2 who is now 11 is enjoying Scouts.

I was a Brownie Guider for 19 years, loved it, I retired when they changed the uniform to trousers, I loved the brown dresses and with warm tights they were warm enough. I belong to a retired guiders group now, all old friends together, some of them still camp.

Plant when my 2 older DDs were Brownies they wore the brown dresses with yellow ties. By the time DD3 went it was sweatshirts and trousers, a whole different look

Unfortunately once I had splashed out on all the various components of this new uniform DD decided she didn't like Brownies She had loved her 2 years at Rainbows but not Brownies. To be fair to her, I think the leaders didn't make it at all interesting.

Plant - I think it's wonderful that people like you give so much to keep these organisations going. You are the sort of people who should get 'Honours' in my opinion.

You must have lots of great memories - and funny stories - of all those years.

I loved brownies but didn't like Girl Guides. I went camping but got so homesick I only lasted one night away. Plant... well done you. Admirable.🌟

We have 4 Brownie Packs in the village, they are all full and there is a waiting list. 2 packs and one Guides share a hall with Scouts and Cubs which was built by parents, Scouters and Guiders on land given to them on the local allotments. My DD was a Brownie, Guide and a Ranger, she loved camping. I now belong to a retired guiders group called Trefoil, we meet once a month, they are great fun and some of them still camp in the summer. The Bucks Guiders Ass. were given, years ago, a lovely little brick and flint school opposite Chequers, with lots of ground for Guides to camp, they love cooking on an open fire, not so keen on collecting the wood, the Brownies stay in the house, it is also let to groups out of the area

It's lovely the youngsters still want to be Brownies.4 packs must be a record. You usually find a lack of leaders restricts the number of places available.I was a Brownie but when it was time to "fly up" to Guides they had no proper leader and were running a bit wild so my Mum didn't want me to join. When things settled down I must have lost my enthusiasm because I never did join.
