    Back to School

The long summer holidays are over for most of us, and what an amazing summer it's been.

It seems most children go back to their new schools, or new school years this week.

My GD2 is back this morning, GD1 on Wednesday and I think GS2 goes back on Tuesday. It will be his last year in school, which is hard to believe. He seems to have suddenly grown up!

Oma, I can understand them having Inset days at the beginning or end of terms. It doesn't disrupt the 'flow' of teaching so much and especially if there are new members of staff it gives them a chance to feel at home, meet other staff etc. For some families those beginnings or endings of term might mean they can travel on holiday slightly cheaper. But I know what you means, 6 weeks "off" and then staff training! On the face of it it seems daft.

I was talking about this to a friend who was a teacher many moons ago , she’s in her 70 s now
she was saying they used to go in the week before start of term to get to know each other and sort any problems out

it’s all different now isn’t it

Oma, we would do that too at college but they have so much more paperwork etc to deal with these days - it was bad enough in my day, but much worse now. And a lot of teachers have already spent days if not weeks preparing schemes of work, lesson plans and resources.

GSs 1 and 2 go back today.

GS1 will almost certainly be very reluctant. GS2 will be fine.

GD has been back since last Wednesday. I hate that she goes back earlier than other schools, I remember feeling cross on her behalf last year! I know they all get the same amount of holiday across the year, but it seems to end her summer more quickly.

I hope all our GC have a smooth return, especially Daisy's GD1.

Good old Baker days, named after the Education minister who brought them in! I'm showing my age by still calling them that rather than Inset days. I recall some fantastic days others were sooooo boring! I always used to go in before the start of a term to get classroom, books etc organised and get back into a getting up in the morning routine! One year, my classroom had been used by the summer playscheme and they'd left all their work on the walls and on cupboards. I was not happy about it and made my feelings known! Everything went in the bin!

There was some confusion in DD's household as to whether GS started today or tomorrow! I still don't know. I think the school staggers starting days so the new pupils have time to find their way around. I've no idea how he'll get on with his beloved PE as his knee is still strapped up and still waiting for an appointment with a surgeon.
Believe you can and you're halfway there.

WeeGranny, in FE we didn't get Baker Days (as far as I can remember) but later on we got an odd day usually at the end of term when we were all shattered. Yes, some were really useful and other less so! But in IT we always had new software to write instructions for and create new assignments etc. Never a dull moment!! You must have been really annoyed that the play scheme people hadn't had the good manners to leave your room tidy.

Gem, I hope GS1 was ok on his first day back.

GD1 started back this morning. Her mum says she's never seen a child so pleased to be going back to school. I texted her to wish her luck and she was buzzing with excitement. I don't think she even noticed the rain! Although she went back for a few days at the end of last term, this is the first time she's done a full day, going o the bus, etc. I hope she's not too tired tonight, as it's a long day.

The children here have been back at school a few weeks now, all settled in, GD1 is living it up in Belgium, loving every minute of it, GD2 goes away next week with her class, here in the Netherlands, DS1 did say where, I will know more when I see them. The forecast isn't so good for next week, they will enjoy themselves whatever weather it is.

Daisy, how lovely your GD1 is able to return to school, I bet she was excited. I am sure the teachers will keep an eye on her.

Lizzie, it must be very exciting for GD1. What is she studying in Belgium? I hope the weather is kind for GD2's school trip next week.

Our GD1 had a wonderful first day back. She coped amazingly well, and didn't seem in the least tired. I think she may need a lie-in on Saturday, but at the moment she's fine. Her mum and dad had been in touch with her head of house so the teachers all know to keep an eye on her. But yesterday she walked from the bus to home (just under a mile, I think) and her friend walked with her, which was very kind of her.

GD2 loves her new teacher. The previous day they had found an injured young wood pigeon in their garden and had taken it to an animal sanctuary. She told her teacher about this and got her first 'well done' sticker!

Daisy, she isn't studying in Belgium, it is the school outing.! As for the weather, 90% chance of rain today, it is warm and sunny! Rain forecast later though. We will see what next week brings.

I am pleased all went well for GD1, well done GD2 for getting the "well done" sticker!xx

Sorry, Lizzie - I got the wrong impression. I'm sure she's having a great time.

I've spoken to GD1's dad today and she was still on a high last night, but woke up with a bit of a headache. She went off happily to school though.
