Lizzie - it's good to know at this stage what's going to happen in the next school year - it's very worrying when plans can't be finalised until say, after summer exams! I hope your GD2 enjoys the rest of the year in her current school, knowing everything's sorted out.

Daisy, it is a good system, now the schools etc can be sorted out for the pupils. I think it is February/March when the schools have open days and the pupils and parents can go and compare them.

Lizzie - I think it's really important for them to see different schools to compare them. Although part of me thinks children shouldn't have to travel a long way to get to school.

Daisy, there are a good selection of schools within cycling distance, the one GD1 goes to is 5 mins on the cycle and it will be the same for GD2, there are children that travel further to school, especially if they live in the country then they have to cycle to the local town. Some do choose to travel further then it is on public transport.

Lizzie - being able to cycle to school is great. Both my GS2 and GD2 can walk to school - although GD2 usually gets taken in the car because her parents are on their way to work and she's too young to cross three busy roads. GD1 has to catch the school bus at 7.10 and it's nearly a mile to the bus stop so her mum either takes her or they scoot and mum brings GD's scooter back home.

Daisy, that is early for GD1 to set off for school! A long way to the bus stop as well. I know when I was away last year I was talking to children (12+) and they were cycling to Tilburg to school, 20 kms so 40km a day.

Gosh that is early for your GD Daisy!
What time does school start? GD starts at 8.30 which we think is early, but it's only about 10 minutes drive and she is driven in.

Yes, it is a long way for GD2, but it's the school she desperately wanted to go to and she was lucky to get offered a place.

School doesn't start until about 8.40 and it's about a 45 minute journey on the bus. They have to leave so early because any later and the traffic would be too congested to get there in time. So the whole bus full is there about 8 am! They can go into the canteen and get food/drinks and no doubt there will be times when it will be handy for last minute homework!! But it does mean leaving home at 7 am.
