A couple of days ago my little grandson just 4, got something in his eye and he was crying all night and then couldn’t open it at all next morning. DD spent 2 hours being passed between GP, 111, opticians and back to 111 again then they called the local hospital directly and they said to come in.
Literally the last place they wanted to take him (or go themselves) but they didn’t want to just leave it.
They were in a complete quandary. Then GS picked at his eye just before they were going to leave and it opened and could clearly see and was happy (still puffy and red but not blind as he had been )
An optician earlier had said even if he seemed better to take him in as he may had a scratch and need antibiotics, but they really didn’t want to for obvious reasons. They got some children’s antihistamine and gave him that as DD thought it might have been a reaction to rolling around in the grass (she had to pick bits off his face just before it all happened).
He was fine all that day , playing as usual, eating fine, not mentioning it or touching it and not even seemingly tired despite v little sleep.
DD phoned a different optician that afternoon and they said absolutely don’t go in to a&e, just get a regular appointment once they’re up and running again (assuming everything continues to be ok) and he gave her his mobile in case anything happened later. Which was very good of him I thought.
All a big worry as eyes are precious, but hospitals are not where we want to be right now.
Yesterday DD took him to a pharmacy, where they gave him antibiotic eye drops. GS is unimpressed by this of course, but it has to be done.
It is still a bit pink and swollen, but a lot better, so fingers crossed no real harm done.
Our family don't believe in just sitting out lockdown with no dramas, do we??
