    Work Experience

As most of you know my GS1 is on the autistic spectrum - bright, chatty, focussed on his current passion (whatever it is) and at times very much a teenager on the spectrum!

Today he started two weeks work experience for the organisation his mum works for. His passion is electronics, computers and pretty much anything he can take apart, rebuild, repurpose etc. In recent months he's built himself a gaming computer from 'bits' and a 3D printer from a kit, among other things. So WE in the IT Department sounded like a good idea. There is a whole section where electronic things are decommissioned (ie taken apart)

Today was Day 1. GS has been getting excited for weeks, so today could have gone very haywire as the excitement boiled over, or better than we could have hoped. This is what happened!

This morning: DIL sent me several photos, with GS looking either (1) attentive, (2) apprehensive, (3) belligerent (4) bolshi (5) overawed. Impossible to tell, but he did look rather smart and grown up!

In the background were racks and racks of various pieces of electronic equipment. DIL said that the lady looking after him was doing a very good job. By 4. 30 he was pretty tired, apparently. He doesn't understand pacing himself, ever!

DIL messaged that she was exhausted from the anxiety - hers not GS1's! It seems her anxiety peaked when GS commented, longingly, 'wouldn't it be great to slide down the steel banisters into the atrium" (several floors high)!!!! I said I thought she was a bit of a wuss - where was her sense of adventure!!! I won't tell you what she said to that! Apparently she had a bad dream on Saturday - that GS1 was prancing around the upper floor that skirts the atrium, in his underpants. I commented it could have been worse by one pair of underpants.

This afternoon GS1 was decommissioning lap tops - scavenging the memory, screens and keyboards from broken machines. Apparently he got through more than the regular staff could have done in a month, they said. We don't know whether he just worked quietly (and quickly!) or talked at them the whole time. Either scenario is possible. My DIL is getting worried they'll sack her and employ GS1 as he will be better value for money!

I'm hoping DIL sleeps ok, and is less worried tomorrow. It doesn't help that DS is currently in Australia!

That job sounds very much what GS loves to, I bet you would have loved to be a fly on the wall Daisy. Your DIL will be a nervous wreck by the time the work experience finishes.

Aww that's fantastic Daisy. He sounds as though he's doing terrifically well. Well done your GS. It's funny what your DIL dreamt....I'd be interested to see what it means. How fortunate he has work experience there too. I bet he'll not want to leave when the time comes. I bet you're really proud of him.👍

Always an anxious time for parents when the children take another step away from home and even more so for your lovely GS. Sounds like it went well and I love your comment about your GS talking AT them . I so understand this as my GS is the same
I’m so pleased it went well and that he enjoyed it.

Thank you ladies. I have to say things can change on a sixpence, so we're all holding our breath, really. He's such a lovely lad and has had to deal with a lot of problems, but if it's something he's passionate about he doesn't give up, even when frustrations boil over.

Clover - it's hard to imagine the intensity of their talking AT, until you've experienced it, isn't it!

Nana - I suspect DIL's dream came out of thoughts of 'what's the worst that can happen'!

Nanto and Gem - I hope so to - poor DIL will be a nervous wreck!

Plant - you're right, I'd love to be there!!

Day 2, and DIL wasn't in the office today - she was at a meeting in London. (This is where we all bite our nails!) Any way his other gran (who lives close to them) picked him up at 4.30, and he was ecstatic! The lady supervising him explained what he'd been doing all day - including fixing several broken PCs and Macs. He had also seen a rerun of how one error made all the tills in all their shops rebuild right in the middle of the day. The lady was also very complimentary and said she'd had great feedback from all the people he has been with. I'm sooooo proud of him.

No wonder you’re proud Daisy. He seems to have found his niche. Long may it continue.
