    Afternoon tea

Yesterday my DD myself and her MIL went for afternoon tea at a little place near us it hasn't been open long but already you have to book a table even for breakfast its so popular, it only sits about 30. very 1950/60 everything is served on old fashioned china with china cups and saucers and tea pots ,
It was one of the best afternoon teas we have had ,
Firstly came the sandwiches , Beef & Pickle, Tuna & Cucumber, Egg &Cress, Cheese savoury, Ham & peace pudding , Coronation Chicken , Brie & Tomato , far too many for us to get through ,
Then came a hot platter Chicken pieces in Tempura batter, Fish bites in batter ,Sweet potato chips and Wedges
After all that Scones with Jam & Cream plus two types of cake
No way could we eat it all so they boxed the sandwiches and cake up for us to bring home what we hadn't ate ,
    £12.99 a head so worth it .
DD forgot to mention she was a vegetarian when she booked the table but they bent backwards to accommodate her when I told them , They made sure there was plenty of sandwiches she could have, the hot platter for her was Hallomi (sp) skewers with roast Peppers, roast Onion, Mushrooms and Corn .
we were all very full after , no the wonder they are so popular .

Goodness what a lot of food! I bet you had a lovely time, and no wonder you had to Doggy bag it!

My main criticism of afternoon teas (to which I am very partial) is not enough sandwiches, you had a lovely selection.
    They deserve to do well

Cor! That sounds better than any afternoon tea I've ever been to.

Oma - that sounds totally scrumptious - and I bet most people need a doggy bag!

You said it was traditional 50s/60s, so I think that's where the hot course came in. I can remember having sandwiches etc, followed by some kind of hot cooked meat with vegetables or pickles, followed by cakes and/or tinned fruit and evaporated milk. I think it was more of a northern thing, so our Southern Belles probably never experienced it. We called it high tea. I think the dainty cucumber sandwiches and little cakes like iced fancies was more of a southern invention. High tea would be your final meal of the day.

Interesting. My understanding of a high tea is just something cooked, like beans on toast for example.

Clover, the same for me. A cooked light meal when you have had your main meal at midday.

(But you could have the tinned fruit and cake etc, as Daisy says!)
