All the better to see you with, Grandma

We'd noticed for a while that GD2 seems to have a lazy eye, so a trip to the GP lead to a referral to the hopstickle (as GD2 calls it) and a prescription for glasses to strengthen the lazy eye and correct longsightedness.

Last week, she had great fun in a well-known chain of opticians choosing frames and yesterday went to collect two pairs of glasses. She's over the moon - glasses 'just like Daddy'! GD1 is disappointed that she can't have any though. It will be interesting to see if/when the novelty wears off and it becomes a daily battle, but in the meantime, we'll enjoy her enthusiasm.

Has anybody got any tips for encouraging her to wear them, please?

Kids today seem to love specs Daisy. My GS1 has to wear them and his sister is horribly jealous. Of course they are not the horrid National Health specs that they had in our day. They are now a fashion item. Apparently some people wear ones with clear glass just for the look

Children seem to love bring able to choose their own frames these days.

None of my children, or so far grandchildren needed glasses, so I have no experience or hints

I bet your GD looks very cute in hers!

Josh had the same thing Daisy he wore glasses all last year and was good about wearing them . When he went back the option said he had done a good job and his eye was back to normal , he was a bit disappointed he didn't need them any more. My DD when she was young always wanted glasses and braces but needed neither

no experience here of children or grandchildren needing glasses, so I won't be much help.

A health check threw up astigmatism in DS when he was about 8. Decided to take all three to the opticians and found DD2 had severe astigmatism. DD1 had a real strop because she couldn't have any spectacles. DS resisted initially but agreed to wear them in the quiet reading room at school and gradually he would put them on whenever needed. His astigmatism is mild but he gets a headache if he does too much reading without glasses. DD was happy to wear them but they did go missing for weeks. The teacher thought George (child from a troubled family) might have misappropriated them but they turned up when the topic table was cleared at the end of term caught in a fold of the table cloth. She used to have My Little Pony specs which probably helped. My MIL wore glasses from early childhood and apparently astigmatism skips a generation so OH and his brothers were all ok.

GS no. 2 has specs, he is 3 1/2. No trouble wearing them, he can see things clearly that he couldn't before. The Batman arms helped no end, plus the fact that his specs aren't dissimilar in shape to mine. Most of us wear them so it's a normal thing as far as he is concerned.

GM - that's good to know. GD2's are a Disney character, I think! Hopefully the world will look a little clearer to her and that will be an incentive once the novelty wears off.

Oma - well done Josh! He can always have trendy sunnies instead

Shem - I didn't know that about astigmatism skipping a generation. DS2 has mild astigmatism. You must have needed the wisdom of Solomon to convince two children that glasses were great and one that they weren't! Nothing in the baby manuals prepares you for this type of dilemma!

Nan - it's a much better word than the real one, isn't it!

GD2 is doing well with her glasses - so far! Today I only nearly trod on them twice, and fortunately neither of the dogs thought they were a new chew toy!

Photo in my media - sorry it's only a small image - I was having a senior moment.
