A Day of Ladders and Snakes

I think I posted last October about my OH's 70th birthday and how the day we'd planned fell apart. We had booked him a flight in a World War II Spitfire, the ones flown by 'The Few' over our skies. We rebooked the flight for April, and it was cancelled because of bad weather, and rebooked it for yesterday. The weather forecasts weren't optimistic, but more in hope than expectation we set off from our DS1's in Sandhurst at 6.30am to get to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford (within waving distance of Wee Granny) by 8.30. The sun tried to break through, failed, tried again, failed, but at least the cloud base was quite high, visibility was good and there was no wind. So you can imagine how thrilled OH was when he was told they would be flying. DS1 and I sat in on the preflight briefings, admired how smart he looked in the flying suit they provide, and of course took endless photos.

OH was like a child whose Christmases had all come together! So excited. The pilot was great, very friendly and totally 'got' OH's enthusiasm. Spitfires were build as single seaters during the War and it was only afterwards that they built 2-seater trainers. Before that the pilot's first flight was solo! The plane OH was flying was built as a single seater and had seen active service, only later becoming adapted to a 2-seater for training purposes. This was the first flight of the day so OH got an extra 5 minutes while they sat at the end of the runway warming up the engine. The pilot knew OH has a private pilot's licence and was keen to have an exciting flight. So off they went, with a small crowd of visitors with very big cameras watching. They returned half an hour later, having done 3 victory rolls, several wing overs (where the plane is on its side) and quite a lot of manoeuvres. Best of all OH had had control for 10 minutes, actually flying the plane. As you can imagine he was over the moon. The plane is a dream to fly and I can see this is something he'll want to do again and again - if we win the Lottery!!

We had a much-delayed breakfast and returned to DS1's for a barbecue, with OH still like an excited toddler.

DIL's parents called round and we were all having a drink the the garden when my phone rang. It was DS2 with the sad news that his lovely FIL had had a heart attack and was in Bournemouth hospital. We came straight home in case DS needed to go to the hospital with DIL, but she was ok and got back home about 9 pm, exhausted and rather tearful. I'm just on my way over there now to look after the girls so they can both go and visit him this morning. He has had 2 stents put in but still needs treatment for a narrowed artery. Not the end to the day we had expected .... but hopefully he will be ok.

Wow, what an amazing experience. Third time lucky. I just showed OH the picture & he said "Woa, lucky man". Well, something a bit stronger 😳 Your post relays how excited & proud you were for him too.

Sorry your day ended on a bit of a low. I hope your DS's FIL is improving.x

I'm glad your hubby wasn't disappointed this time Daisy. It sounds like something my OH would love but not me! I don't like flying in small planes.

I'm sorry the day had to end the way it did. It must have been very worrying for you all and I do hope that DS's FIL makes good progress.

Ladies - thank you as always for your understanding comments and sharing of an emotional day. Enfys - I said that to my DIL, that Bournemouth has an excellent cardiac unit. DS and DIL went to see him this morning, along with his son who had driven over from Essex. He'd had a sleepless night but was quite bright and cheerful, but is desperate to be in his own home. He's due to be discharged tomorrow, but he lives on his own and it's a worry that he might try to do too much. He's got to go back for more treatment and I know that will hang heavily over him. He really needs looking after, but I don't know if he will get any help or not.

Apart from FIL worries, my OH is still on a high (you can't help the puns really!) from yesterday. I've got loads of photos to process for him and I know he can't wait to show them off.

Daisy your story can't help but remind us of the unpredictability of life and how the beginning of the day and the end of the day and even the bit in between changes from moment to moment. It is a reminder that we need to try to enjoy every experience - your DH obviously did this - and value every moment as your sons FiL is probably very much aware of right now. My own father had a heart attack at 59 but went on in perfect health for another almost 30 years after.

What a worry for your DS & DIL. Let's face it no-one wants a long stay in hospital. I hope that he doesn't try to do too much. On a lighter note, I can imagine your husband's excitement waiting for his pics.

Qwerty - yes he looks after the children one day a week and often steps in at other times now he's retired.

He's back home now, but isn't allowed to do anything - not even wash up. I'm really worried about how he's going to care for himself and am hoping his siblings who all live locally might help. Poor DIL is already exhausted with the worry on top of working full-time and all the other things that go with 2 small children. He can't stay with them because they only have 2 small bedrooms - sleeping on the sofa in the living room isn't an option. The other granny (his ex) has Airbnb guests. But he would much rather be in his own environment. I don't know if he will get any carer support - does anybody else know please?

I've offered to do some cooking for his freezer so he only has to microwave a meal. I don't know what else I can do really. He lives about half an hour from us so it's not that easy to pop over a couple of times a day.

We've also got to make arrangements for the children on 'his' day, which I'm not keen to cover as it's our dog training day. That sounds really mean, doesn't it, but it's important to me that Eva gets over this other-dog problem, and is the only thing I do which isn't directly for the family.

What an amazing present for your OH. Really the trip of a lifetime, your description is so evocative of the excitement and exhilaration.

And then, such a downer at the end of the day. I do hope he recovers quickly, it's all so worrying.
