Off we go again, old friends and grandkids day out

8 years ago my friends C and P and I took our GDs aged 5 and 3, to Filey for the day. C and P's GD aged 5, who doesnt live locally, was staying with them. C, the girls and I went by car, P went on his motorbike. My OH hadn't retired at this point.

This has happened every summer since, apart from 2020, and we all know why that was.
Over the years our party had grown. My OH retired so could join us, siblings and cousins were born and became old enough to join in.

Now we are 4 adults and 6 children , ages ranging from 14 to 6. We need 2 tables when we have our fish and chip lunch. The kids love to have their own table, and that suits us too

It is a packed day of paddling pool, beach with drinks and snacks for the children, slog up the hill from the beach, late fish and chip lunch , park, ice creams, then back home.
This year's day out is on Monday. We look forward to it every year

Sounds great fun! I’ve never been to Filey.

Gem - it's lovely. It's a tradition all the children will look back on with very happy memories when they are our age!

Yes! As you may remember he couldn't last year. We have a full number this year

I don't know if C and P's GD1, who will be 15 in September, will come next year. She has always been a lot 'older' for her age than my GD or her sister, and by next year she may not want to come to her grandparents during the holidays.

In 5 years time we will have GS3 to take, so we may have many more years to come, albeit with fewer GC as the years pass. As we grandparents grow older, we may have to adapt the trip to avoid climbing that hill

I'm sure it will be a lovely day out.

We haven't been to Filey for many years.

Gem - I know you had a lovely day in Filey and the sun shone for you. Did C and P's GD1 enjoy the day as much as the other GCs?

Daisy, she seemed to enjoy the day, but seemed to keep herself quite aloof from the other children! She did go into the sea with GS1 though. She did say to me that maybe she will continue by bringing her GC one day, so I guess that was a success!

C and P's GS2 and GD2 are a year either side of my GD and they all get along well, so GD just hangs out with them now

You are right , the sun shone all day and a lovely day was had by all. We considered ourselves very lucky .

Gem, how sweet that C and P's GD1 is thinking about her own potential grand children. I'm sure she wouldn't have said that if she didn't enjoy the day. With a new possible baby to join the party next year it might help to give her a new role as a sort of surrogate "Auntie" to baby E.
