I breast fed my babies till they were 6 months old and the reason for stopping was sheer inconvenience of feeding a baby that has become much bigger, it was had to discretely feed a larger baby. I just felt the men in any company I was in were hoping to get a glimpse of my boobs ! Plus as in my DD's case she had lots of teeth by then and she did tend to nibble .

As for feeding an older child , well I would say that's up to mum I suppose but I would wonder how the 'weaning' period would go, as we all know 2 years old can be extremely temperamental !
