    For the cleaners on here.

I'm off for the week on Saturday & I'm trying to get the house in order so it's clean & tidy when I get back. My problem came about when I went to clean the double oven. I've used one of those black oven 'mats' to catch spills etc. Never again. When I lifted it it looks like it's left a very thin layer of the backing on the base of the oven. I tried the simplest oven cleaning method from FB. I followed it to the letter but no luck. It didn't even move the grease on the sides. After a break I then tried an oven spray....the same again. For some unknown reason the metal frames that hold the shelves don't come out, which makes it even harder to get to the sides. This cleaning malarky just isn't for me!

What I'm wondering is if I could damage anything in the ovens if I try the steam cleaner tomorrow? I know not to touch the self cleaning back of the ovens. The lower oven is both conventional & fan, where the top oven is conventional. I put the wire shelves in the dishwasher earlier & they don't look like they've been totally cleaned either. The oven is only about two years old so it's not as if it's 'caked' with grease.

Has anyone got any suggestions please? I have to do jobs at a slow rate & rest for a bit in between. I hate bruddy cleaning! Worse to come as I've to iron before I go. I'm pleased that I'm going for a hair pamper after lunch ...time for me.

Might be a case of the blind leading the blind here but did you use the fb white vinegar, bicarbonate soda etc? I was hoping to try this one day if I feel in a cleaning mood. I've used one of the mats but never had any problems. I've also used a steam cleaner though mine didn't do too well though it didn't do any harm!

Nana I find old fashioned soap powder works just as well on the wire shelves just put them in a large dish or even the bath with the hottest water you can get and soap powder leave them overnight and the grease lifts off but if you use the bath put a old towel in the bottom first to prevent scratches . My SIL swears by those bags you put them in I think it's by Klean off , I haven't tried them myself . Your steamer should be ok as long as you don't steam the fan area, Those sheets are a pain I had one that actually stuck to the bottom of my oven , better off with a tray or tin foil . There is another Way to clean the oven but it stinks you put a bowl of Armonia in a COLD oven and leave it overnight then the muck just wipes off but boy does it stink the house out I have tried it once and it does work but had to have the doors and windows open all day

Ha, thanks Shem. It was the mixture you said. I don't now if it will work in anyone else's oven? I would hate to rob you of the pleasure. I'll give the steam a try, if I'm up to it. If it doesn't work I'll pass the job onto OH. He he!

My youngest daughter used those bags for the wire shelves when they left a rented property and wanted it all perfect to get their bond back. She was very impressed!

Thanks ladies. I'll try the bath idea if the steam doesn't shift it. I only have wash liquid tho, not the powder sort, but hopefully there won't be any difference. I can't use the amonia Oma as our lovely little pooch sleeps in the utility next to the kitchen.

Nana - just one question - WHY are you going to all this trouble to clean the oven when you won't be there to use it for a week? Relax and get in the holiday mood or you'll be too tired to make the best of your much-needed holiday. Quite honestly, if anyone breaks into your house (and I sincerely hope they don't) they won't be looking inside your ovens. If you're worried about how it will look when you get back, then get takeaways for the first couple of days so you don't have to look.

                  Very wise words from Daisy!

The bags work well. I also made my own using a heavy duty rubble sack and oven cleaner. I left them overnight and then put them all in the dishwasher which is probably totally wrong but much easier! My biggest problem is the double glazed type doors that get grease caught between them. I did think about cleaning my oven before the weekend as DS & GF are staying with us. Then I thought again and decided not to bother!

I must admit before I go away even if it's only for a few days I clean everything , my DD says it looks like it's never been lived in , I like to come home to a clean house , when my children were small I would take them to my mother's all day Saturday but would have to clean the whole house on a Friday , it's always been a problem with me when I look back since my DD was born , but I enjoy housework and washing up my family think I'm odd 😀

I use oven pride for my ovens, it does a very good job. I put the cleaner and shelves in the bag,and leave outside overnight. keeping behind some of the cleaner for inside the oven. I always use foil in the bottom of both ovens, never used the black sheet thingies.

I too use the Oven Pride Nana, its marvellous, shelves come up like new, just put them in a bag and leave them, you have to wear gloves but saves all the hassle, have a new cooker now, it does say self cleaning on the tin, either i am doing something wrong or its a fib, but just have to run a soapy cloth over it and it comes up good.....
