    exploding oven

Morning all, just wanting your thoughts please, we bought an oven and hob from Wickes, about 5yrs ago, the grill stopped working just out of the years guarantee so never got that fixed, yesterday about 5 oclock I made tea and went out, when I came back about 8oclock, I came in to the oven outside door had exploded, it wasn't even on had been off for about an hour, luckily and thankfully DD had just literally came out of the kitchen sat at the table and there was an almighty bank, OH went to check and he said there was glass all over, on the benches everywhere, sticking in the wooden benches, so a few seconds later and DD would have been in the kitchen, just not worth thinking about.

So this morning I have rang Wickes who have said they don't stock our cooker anymore, in fact don't stock any of this range, and it is not in guarantee, I know that, so manager said there is nothing he can do, so I have got Head Office number, surely this is a hazard, I said I don't care how old the cooker is, this should not happen, so waiting for Head Office to open and see what they say, I know im going to get fobbed off with its out of guarantee, and I am not really bothered about that, what I am more bothered about is the fact an oven door can explode and nobody take responsibility for it, this shouldn't happen, would you take a "it's out of its guarantee" as an answer, our Amy was so lucky, what if the grandkids had been around...still picking little bits of shattered glass up, floor has been hovered 3 times, washed and there are still tiny fragments off glass between the tiles....oh well I will give them a ring and see what they say.....

They are certainly going to go down the "Out of gaurentee" aren't they but I would check on line for any reviews about the Oven and see if anyone else has had the same problem is it by any chance a "Beko" as there was a big story about some of their products over the past few years saying that I have a couple of their appliances and they have been no trouble,I would also report to your local "Trading Standards" and see what they say what a shock for you I'm so glad no one was injured.xxx

Thank goodness no one was hurt Pearl As you say your DD, GC or any of you could have been in the area.
Out of guarantee doesn't seem any excuse to me. You should persue this!

White goods now just don't seem to have the life span that they did years ago, when a engineer called a few years ago to fix my then washing machine he said if you got 5 years from a machine you where lucky I had my first washer for over 20 years with no problems and only changed it because I had integral white goods fitted at the time,DD had to replace her Fridge/Freezer after 4 years as it just stopped working with no warning all expensive items to the average family.

Pearl - it cannot be right that no-one has responsibility for such a dangerous appliance, and reading the link below, you may have a solution under the Sale of Goods Act which provides cover for goods bought up to 6 years ago. But it will be up to you to chase 'them'. I would think it must have been a manufacturing fault, but perhaps Trading Standards can help on that. thank God no one was injured!

I would think it is the manufacturer who is responsible , the Wicks manager should inform them and a warning be given out , I would look to the manufacturer for compensation and never buy that make again

Pearl the problem is if it has even the slightest of scratches or knocks they can explode usually as they cool down , it has something to do with surface tension . my Sil was standing next to their`s when their oven door exploded . He has a friend goes out to homes to look at these sort of things for company`s he came out and had a look and said 9 out of every 10 has had some kind of surface damage how they can tell when only fragments left i dont know , you might have a fight on your hands but its worth a go . Good luck

Thanks all, the make was "Moffat" I cant find anything on "Google", have rang wickes, there not interested, rang trading standards they said I have had it too long for them to investigate, so looks like I wont get anywhere with it, I cant be bothered with a fight, although I am still angry and upset this could have been a lot worse, and should never happen, how would you know if your oven door is going to explode, if it broke down after 5 yrs fair enough, not good but didn't put anyone in danger, this was dangerous and could have been a lot worse, I hate getting fobbed off, in fact I cant stand it, no one was hurt but a few minutes earlier and could have

Daisy I will check the link out thanks..x

Thanks Oma, I am going to check them out... ive been passed from pillar to post this morning, I will take my bucket off glass and put it on "Wickes" counter and aske the manager if he would like me to come to his kitchen and throw glass all over it, I wont really, just annoys me how no one takes responsibility anymore and blames each other, but see where today gets me, will check FB and Twitter if I don't get anywhere.... too be honest its been a poop cooker since getting it....x

I have just received a phone call from Wickes who have spoke to Electolux about the oven door, and apparently if it was a defect in the glass it would have happened sooner within the 1st year, so it must be down to "hang on wait for it", I have "cleaned" it too much....well I have heard it all now.....hmmmm,

Just going to leave it cant be bothered, but thankfully no one was hurt....xx

Your comment that they do not stock this range of cooker any more makes one think yours is not an isolated case Pearl5

Crikey Pearl, thank goodness the grandkids weren't there. As for cleaning it too much, you have got me worried, I'm always cleaning mine.

Wonder if ZIZI has got her new oven yet.

Plant "Moffat" are now Electrolux, and that is what i thought

Nanto, I have just told OH why it has happened and he just laughed, don't know why... I think its just excuses, I know by googling there has been glass doors exploding because there has been a "self clean" icon on the oven already and apparently while using it it has caused oven doors to explode, scary really, it looks by the pictures the glass has shattered, where mine it has exploded...
