    A present idea

My little grandson Rick is 7 now and he really wants a 3d pen for his birthday. I am just wondering if anyone has ever bought one, are the components safe for children?

Sandra, I have never heard of a 3D pen!

I would be interested to know if any of our other members have?

I haven't seen or used one, Sandra, but the two things that occur to me are would he be able to control the heat, and would the pen itself be too large and heavy for his little hands to control properly?

My GS1, who's nearly 18, has a 3D printer which he runs off a Raspberry Pi and that takes quite a lot of setting up, but he and his dad have made several little things with it.

Would it be possible for him to try one out first?

EDIT: I've just thought - it might be worth reading some reviews on Amazon first and see if that helps. They do look good fun!

I have seen them here but I don't know anyone that has one, a friend of DS2 has the 3D printer and makes amazing things using it.

They seem easy enough to use with practice i think but at what cost of the plastic needed
We had a 3D printer and the reels are quite expensive .
Having said that these pens are aimed at children so maybe the stuff to go with them are not as expensive .

I would do as suggested read the reviews first before buying , it may be something he uses a couple of times then gets sick of it .
