    Fundraising ideas

Would you like to share your fundraising ideas with us?
I'm sure many of us have experience of fundraising from our children's school and playgroup days, and maybe from committees and organisations we belong to.

I belong to a small (too small!) group, the Friends of our local library, which I am secretary of. Our library building was declared unsafe and suddenly closed , it must be over 3 years ago now. For a while it operated from a room in the village, then it got it's own bus. This is open 5 and a half days each week, over 4 locations. So you have to know where to go when you go to the library depending on what day it is!
Our new library is set to open in the autumn of next year (it was originally to be spring)
The aim of our group is to promote and support the library, now in bus form, and of course continue to support it in the permanent building.
We feel that many people are reluctant to join us as we have no 'proper' library. Many people think our village has no library!!
    This makes fundraising difficult.

A murder mystery evening planned for next week was cancelled at the last meeting due to not enough people being available to effectively do it. With a small group it only takes one or two to be unavailable on the day for things to fall through.
This event was postponed and we hope to have it next year.
We decided at the last meeting that we need to arrange and plan our events in advance more than we have.
So, the next meeting is about fundraising. When I set the agenda, apart from the usual topics, it will be basically fundraising and forward planning.

Next year we hope to have to have the Murder Mystery Night, a quiz night has been suggested too. We always take part in the village carnival in July, having a stall.
We are to bring our diaries and any ideas the next meeting.
I just wondered if any members had ideas?

Making huge amounts is not the aim, anything helps, and it is as much for publicity as making money.
We won't be doing any sponsored events .

    * Edited to say that as we don't have our own building yet, any event we have has to take place in venue we book, which involves paying for of course!

Gem, isn't not easy trying to raise funds for something people don't believe exists, so I would put publicity as you first priority. People in your village need to see how having the library could benefit them.

Do you have any computers on the bus? If so you could perhaps offer an open morning for people to see how they could use the computers (there are still people who don't have their own).

You could perhaps have something similar to promote audiobooks, e-books and large print etc.

Our GDs love going to the library on a Saturday and they have story-times, games etc. Would some 'themed' children's promotions bring people in - the children would probably love the fact the library is currently a bus. Schools often have a theme for a whole half-term. Could you tie something in with the local school.

Any event is enhanced with the offer of cakes and a cup of tea or coffee.

Given that the country is heading for an election in about 5 weeks, what about asking local activists if they could drop off a leaflet about the library when they're delivering their party leaflets. A good community-spirit gesture.

Book swap/sale? Can you maybe get the local primary school involved with visiting the library or making posters advertising the times/locations of Library bus? Sorry, just seen Daisy has suggested local school !Village treasure hunt?
Believe you can and you're halfway there.
