    The law on the age at which a child can do certain things is complex and often confusing, but Elizabeth Langham helps us pick our way through the "cans" and "can'ts"



    At What Age Can a Child....?



    There are many laws governing children's rights and what they are, or are not, allowed to do.

    Here's a short and necessarily incomplete guide but it will answer some commonly asked questions.

    Age 5

    Enter a casino or bar, but not without an without an adult and not if there is any gambling taking place.

    Babysit! But the NSPCC guidelines suggest 16

    Must start full time education. The parents decide where

    Must pay child fare on a train

    Drink alcohol in private

    Be charged with and convicted of a criminal offence

    Be made subject of an Asbo

    Age 12

    Be kept in police detention if if arrested

    Sign their own passport

    Age 13

    Do light work such as a paper round

    Age 14

    Do a job involving light work

    Ride a horse on a road without a helmet

    Age 15

    Be sentenced to up to two years detention and training order - but it has to be very serious.

    Age 16

    Go into a bar on their own

    Drink beer, cider or wine in a restaurant

    Join the armed forces with their parents' consent

    Enter or live in a brothel

    Marry or register a civil partnership

    Hold a licence to drive a moped up to 50cc

    Buy a pet

    Leave school on the last Friday in June

    Work full time

    Bet on the pools or buy a lottery ticket

    Leave home

    Consent to medical treatment

    Consent to heterosexual or homosexual intercourse

    Get an NI number

    Apply for a passport

    Pay full fare

    Buy aerosol paint

    Work as a street trader or buy scrap metal

    Age 17

    Give blood

    Hold a driving licence for a car, motorcycle up to 125cv or tractor

    Age 18

    Now an adult with all the rights and responsibilities that go with it.

    But they must wait until they are 21 before they can

    Hold a motorbike licence up to 47bhp

    Adopt a child

    Supervise a learner driver

    Be sent to prison

      It is good to know that a 5 year old child can babysit, while drinking alcohol, in private! The law is crazy!
