My first office job was in an estate agents. The phone rang whilst I was taking dictation and the boss told me to answer it and say he wasn't in. I crossed my fingers as I was telling a lie. All went well until the lady asked when he would be back and I said "hold on a minute, I'll just ask him". Fortunately the boss and the client both roared with laughter. Another time he took a call whilst dictating some sales particulars. It seemed to go on for ages and I started daydreaming. He suddenly said "outside" so I leapt off the chair and headed for the door! He meant outside as in the garden of the property concerned!

Shem, that reminds me of the day I was taking dictation from my Irish boss, who had a strong accent. I'd had a boozy lunch in the pub, and nothing to eat, so was quite pleased that I was keeping pace. Then he dictated "and this will come true in due course." This made no sense at all, and I just knew I'd never make sense of my shorthand if I didn't get it right to start with. I asked him to repeat it several times before he said, very exasperated, yes, Daisy, will come true - t h r o u g h - in due course. 😳
