Daisy, this is just causing you both stress isn't it? We all know that this sort of thing causes upheaval, but when they don't turn up and even worse things don't seem right, its just not fun.

I think the least I would want at this point is a promise of a completion date, and something in writing to the effect that the full amount will only be paid if this date is met. Maybe that will encourage him to get on and turn up?!

If it really is beyond his capabilities he should tell you, or draft in more capable help!

Well, one problem has been resolved. Patio Man has sacked us! He turned up just after 7 this morning, and wasn't at all happy when OH pointed out the problems, and that the grouting hadn't dried grey as he said it would, and what's worse where he hadn't cleaned it up properly it had stained the slabs. We also said we weren't happy with a tiny ramp he'd put in to level up between two areas. He'd only done it half way across the path and it was already crumbling round the edges. We also wanted him to check the levels as we're not sure they are right.

He got really cross and said we were always complaining and were treating him like a child and stormed off! He came back and took his tools to the neighbour's where he'd due to go next (heaven help them).

Anybody want to d oa bit of patio laying? Doughnuts will be back on the menu!

Oh good grief!! How very ungrateful when you were willing to give him chance. He will not go far!
In a way it is a good thing though Daisy, before he wastes any more of your time.

When we were thinking of having ours done, I posted on our local FB page for recommendations. I got a lot of them and some names cropped up several times. Some had websites where you could see some of their previous work, and testimonials. We got a couple of quotes then got cold feet anyway! Ours is on (maybe permanent!) hold.

I hope you soon find someone reliable to sort this out x

Gem - we got quite a few recommendations and perhaps we were foolish to go with the guy who was obviously just starting out on his own, but he talked a good talk and seemed genuine, and keen. Unfortunately he was neither, and I really hope no-one asks us how it went, because it's such a small community and he'll find it difficult to get any sort of work round here. I think he's quite vulnerable emotionally and trying to get back on your feet is hard if no-one will give you a chance. In a way his walking out saved us from a difficult decision, because he wasn't up to completing the job.

Daisy I think to be honest its the best thing , you paying good money you should get a good job .
We all try to help young people starting out but to me he hasn't the right frame of mind to be starting anything at the moment .

I bet when you find someone else they will spot the problems with his work instantly .

A chap who is currently working on a friend's garden is going to call round on his way home tonight. Fingers crossed. I really just want to get it finished.

The chap who came round tonight was really nice, and we know he's doing a great job on our friends' garden. He said it's about 5 days work and we'll probably need two more packs of slabs. But he can't do it until November! Boo hoo

                      Oh I am sorry Daisy
At least you can be confident you will get a good job done in the end though.

I know Gem, it will be miserable living with the lunar landscape outside the back door though! I dread the wet weather coming.

Lizzie - you're right, I know, but it makes me very sad to see the garden looking like it does at the moment. We're doing some sorting out and OH has got a labourer coming on Thursday for the day to move heavy stuff and do a few odd jobs connected with the patio.

I hope you will feel happier when you have had a tidy up. Did the new patio man comment on the previous work? Time to get the paints out Daisy
