    Utility Rooms

Oma mentioned elsewhere that her utility room is very tiny - just room for the washing machine and dryer. Ours isn't much bigger - I stack the dryer on top of the washing machine and have a Belfast sink with a tiny bit of workspace round it. I use the sink for washing the dog's bowls etc, and soaking things like tea towels and washing up cloths. Plus I can get the shelves from the oven in there to soak - they always need a soak. So it's very useful and I'm grateful I've got it, but still struggle because of the tiny workspace.

Has anyone got the perfect utility room?

If you had to choose taking space from your kitchen or other room to fit one in would you do it?

If you haven't got one what do you do with things like washing up oven shelves, barbecue shelves, salad drawers from the fridge etc?

Friends of mine have, for me anyway, a perfect utility room. It is a walk through with washer, drier on one side, sink, shelves etc on the other, oh, and a rack for shirts etc that they don't put in the drier. They are moving house though so either have to create one in their new home or really miss it! DS1 has a handy one as well, only no sink in it.

Lizzie - your friend's utility sounds perfect!

One house we lived in had a utility room off the kitchen and had a 'front door' at one end and a back door onto the garden at the other. All the machines, cupboards etc were on one wall. It was great with children and dogs running in and out all the time - I could easily sweep it up in the evening and it saved such a lot of traffic through the hall!

When we moved here, 9 years ago, the one thing on our list that the house didn't have was a utility room.
As we had 4 cats then, it woudl have been so useful if only for their feeding bowls! A sink for dirty jobs would be good too.
So, we don't have one, but I wish we did, even with one cat if would help.

I have one, the side door is in there and it has the (now redundant) cat flap in it. Plenty of storage, the washer and dryer and tall freezer and a sink all there too. Also OH put a bookshelf up for my cookery books. Wouldn’t like to be without it but I’m sure I’d manage.

We haven't got a utility room. When we got this house the words 51 years ago the words utility room weren't in our vocabulary.
There was a little room off the kitchen but we called it the little kitchen. I suppose it would be called a utility room now.
Well hubby knocked the walls out,and made it into one big kitchen. I don't have a hankering for a utility room, i love my big kitchen as it is.

I have a utiliy room which houses the washer and drier, cupboards for cleaning materials, iron etc and it does have a sink. I have the fridge/freezer in the kitchen and another freezer in the garage. Unfortunately it is not next to the kitchen so don't use the sink much.

Plant my friend has like a second kitchen area she uses as a utility but its sort of a little annex and she doesn't like it, there is a bit of a corridor that leads to the garden between the kitchen and utiity , she said its too much of a effort to carry everything through there so doesn't use the sink in the utility much .

Oma, did you check your Hotpoint washer isn’t on the recall list.

I would really miss my sink in the utility room. It's so useful for the 'dirty' and messy jobs and much bigger and deeper than the kitchen sink. Oma - what a pity there's nowhere to plumb one in in yours.

Nanto - isn't it funny how our wish list for kitchens, bathrooms and cloakrooms has changed over the years. The first two houses we lived in didn't have cloakrooms - and that's something else I'd miss now.
