    National Citizen Service

My GS2 is doing this scheme at the moment.

He's a rather quiet lad, with a small, close circle of very good friends, so joining one of these courses was probably quite a long way out of his comfort zone, as he knows no-one else on the course. Part of the course is a community project and work to support a charity which the group chooses. No-one seemed to have any thoughts about this, so GS suggested Brain Tumour Research because of his dad. The rest of the group gave their overwhelming support, but it took quite a lot for GS to speak up. So proud of him.

You have every right to be proud Daisy. His parents must be so proud of him as well.

I hadn't heard of it until this year. It sounds really good - a bit like a mini Duke of Edinburgh award - and great for this 16-18 age group in the school holidays.

GS2 is enjoying it and after all the months of lockdowns and self-isolating it's good for him to be getting out, meeting new people and doing something different.

The group decided to do a sponsored walk of 11k to represent the 11,000 people who are diagnosed with brain cancer every year. Their fund-raising is going well, so DS2 is very pleased. The Brain Tumour Charity has lost 25% of its income during lockdowns which impacts heavily on its research programme - one of the hidden effects of Covid.

                EDIT, 9th August.

This team of youngsters have pulled out all the stops and have so far raised the second highest sum ever for a charity appeal in an NCS programme. They are trying so hard now to beat the current record, and I couldn't be more proud of what my GS2 and the rest of the team are doing.

They are going to walk, run or cycle the 11k blindfolded. There's a photo on my FB page is anyone wants to have a look.
